Mayor Mamdani condemned Staten Island NYPD officer James Giovansanti\u2019s 547 speed- and red-light camera tickets<\/a> as \u201cunacceptable\u201d on Friday, but stopped short of committing to discipline the lead-footed lawman in his first comments since Streetsblog exposed Giovansanti\u2019s record.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat behavior is unacceptable, and I say that because everyone, including those in law enforcement, must follow traffic laws across our city,\u201d Mamdani told Streetsblog at an unrelated press conference on Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

But Hizzoner played cat-and-mouse about what he plans to do about a driver on his payroll who endangers the residents of Staten Island so wantonly.<\/p>\n

Streetsblog had pressed the mayor on whether Giovansanti should face official NYPD discipline for his actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to continue to have a conversation internally around what it looks like to follow through on that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I will say is that I do have an expectation that everyone employed by the city sets an example for what it looks like to act responsibly in consideration with the safety of other New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Giovansanti\u2019s 4,800-pound RAM 1500 truck received 187 camera-issued tickets in 2025 \u2014 an average of one every other day.<\/p>\n

He is the exact type of driver advocates and lawmakers hope to rein in with the \u201cStop Super Speeders Act,\u201d a\u00a0pending<\/a>\u00a0bill in Albany that would force the worst repeat speeders to install a speed limiter in their vehicles. <\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s Department of Transportation backs the bill<\/a>, and the mayor has come out in supp<\/a>o<\/a>rt<\/a> of the state measure as well. <\/p>\n

Asked on Friday whether he\u2019d spoken to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch about Giovansanti\u2019s driving, Mamdani replied, \u201cThis is part of a larger conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new mayor previously deferred to vague \u201cconversations\u201d when pressed on issues that may put him in conflict with Tisch and the NYPD. <\/p>\n

In January, as the NYPD\u2019s criminal crackdown on cyclists continued on Mamdani\u2019s watch despite his campaign pledge to end it, Hizzoner said he was having \u201cconversations\u201d<\/a> with Tisch about the policy \u2014 which his administration ultimately ended in late March.<\/p>\n

NYPD has yet to comment on Streetsblog\u2019s reporting.<\/p>\n
