{"id":211953,"date":"2026-04-27T23:48:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T23:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/211953\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T23:48:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T23:48:08","slug":"mamdanis-plan-to-delay-pension-payments-echoes-the-schemes-that-brought-nyc-to-near-bankruptcy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/211953\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani&#8217;s plan to delay pension payments echoes the schemes that brought NYC to near bankruptcy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite a $7.1 billion hole, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/27\/business\/londons-housing-crash-a-cautionary-tale-for-nyc-as-mamdani-eyes-second-home-tax\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani <\/a>has pushed back against any serious cutting to his budget and instead wants to delay required payments to city pension funds.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s precisely the kind of tactics that brought the city to the brink of bankruptcy in the \u201970s. <\/p>\n<p>At the least, it will <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/27\/us-news\/nyc-ny-politics-live-updates-on-zohran-mamdani-governors-race-more-april-27-28-29-30\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saddle future taxpayers<\/a> with unnecessary costs. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the moment, the city is on-track to meeting its long-term pension-funding obligations by its 2032 deadline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet to help close his budget hole, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/27\/opinion\/how-mamdani-accidentally-revealed-the-reality-of-nyc-housing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mamdani would push<\/a> $1 billion worth of payments into the 2040s.<\/p>\n<p>That would be both costly and risky.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n<p>It would leave the fund less sound as it strives to cover future pension payments to municipal retirees (which by law are backed by taxpayers). <\/p>\n<p>And it would saddle future city budgets with added costs.<\/p>\n<p>As the Citizens Budget Commission\u2019s Andrew Rein warns, such a move would force \u201cour children [to] pay even more of our bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hizzoner\u2019s budget clocks in at a whopping $127 billion. And there\u2019s surely plenty more that can and should be cut before resorting to financial gimmicks, like delaying pension payments.<\/p>\n<p>Again, the city used just that kind of move for years \u2014 spending more than City Hall raked in revenue \u2014 until it nearly went broke, with no one rushing to bail it out. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/26\/us-news\/mamdani-acted-like-godfather-mobster-in-dangerous-stunt-outside-ken-griffins-pad-ex-gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mamdani needs to learn<\/a> from that lesson, play by the rules and stop thinking about how to spend more than he\u2019s got.<\/p>\n<p>For all his socialist dreams, he still needs to deal with reality.
