The New York Giants made it clear they weren\u2019t leaving the 2026 NFL Draft without adding another weapon at wide receiver, and they were willing to pay for the right fit. That decision led them to trade back into the third round to select Malachi Fields out of Notre Dame, a move centered on size, physicality and reliability for young quarterback Jaxson Dart.<\/p>\n
For Fields, the moment his NFL dream became reality is one he won\u2019t forget.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was super special, just taking it all in with my family and some friends back home,\u201d he said Saturday night in. call with New York media. \u201cJust super special and a super blessed moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
There was little certainty leading up to the call.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just knew it was a one out of 32 chance,\u201d Fields said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t too sure what team it was going to be, but just excited that my phone rang that night.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Giants\u2019 decision to trade up only added to the significance.<\/p>\n
\u201cDefinitely, it does mean more,\u201d Fields said. \u201cThey took a chance for me, trading up, investing in me like that. I just want to prove them right.\u201d<\/p>\n
At 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds, Fields gives the Giants a different dimension in a receiver room that already features Malik Nabers. His catch radius is something he takes pride in.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt means it\u2019s everything that I worked to do is being confident and being able to make those plays,\u201d Fields said. \u201cIt just shows my ability as a playmaker and just try to continue to build on that.\u201d<\/p>\n
That size also translates into how he sees himself on the field.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think just the ability to do that,\u201d he said when asked about playing big. \u201cPlaying big, being a big dude and playing big is just something special.\u201d<\/p>\n
While his timed speed drew mixed reviews during the pre-draft process, Fields believes his game speed tells the real story.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the difference between running a 40 and just running in football games,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a difference to it when the ball\u2019s in the air and the bullets are flying. I think you can see as well on tape the play speed is a little bit faster than the 40.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fields expects his skillset to complement Nabers, particularly when defenses focus attention elsewhere.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe so,\u201d he said about benefiting from one-on-one opportunities. \u201cTake some pressure off the quarterback. When his go-to guy might be double-teamed, he has another option. Just adds some depth to the room.\u201d<\/p>\n
Building chemistry with Dart will be key, and while the two haven\u2019t connected yet, Fields is eager for that to change. \u201cI haven\u2019t talked to him yet,\u201d he said Saturday. \u201cHeard a little bit about him, got to see him ball out last year, see him at Ole Miss. I\u2019m excited to go compete with that dude.\u201d<\/p>\n
His role won\u2019t be limited to catching passes. Fields emphasized the importance of doing the physical work that often goes unnoticed. \u201cImmense pride,\u201d he said of his blocking. \u201cIt\u2019s a big part of my game.\u201d<\/p>\n
That mentality aligns with the tone the Giants are trying to establish under head coach John Harbaugh, whose teams are known for their competitiveness and physicality. Fields pointed to that identity as something he values. \u201cJust dudes that love to compete, love to win, have that winning mindset,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The path to the NFL wasn\u2019t rushed. Fields considered declaring earlier but chose to transfer to Notre Dame to develop further.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did consider coming out, but getting grades back and hearing what scouts are saying and what I needed to work on,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was just \u2014 I thought it was the best decision I could have made.\u201d<\/p>\n
That decision helped him refine his approach and mentality.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust having that dog mentality, being that playmaker,\u201d Fields said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I was lacking back at Virginia.\u201d<\/p>\n
He\u2019s studied some of the league\u2019s top receivers to shape his game, including Julio Jones, A.J. Brown, Keenan Allen and Mike Evans, focusing on how bigger players can still move efficiently and refine their craft.<\/p>\n
As he prepares to enter the league, Fields isn\u2019t setting expectations too far ahead. \u201cI don\u2019t expect anything,\u201d he said. \u201cJust kind of coming in trying to be a sponge, soak it all up, and just come in ready to work and try to make an impact on the team as best as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n
