The fifth commission for the plinth on the High Line elevated park is an homage to the Buddhas of Bamiyan, the pair of 6th-century colossi in central Afghanistan that the Taliban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2002\/03\/01\/an-absolute-political-priority-bamiyan-buddhas-may-be-rebuilt?utm_source=CNN&amp;utm_medium=article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">blew up<\/a> in 2001.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoieamnb00063b6qmm1pxihl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new sculpture is by the Vietnamese American artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen and is titled after the nickname locals in the Bamiyan Valley gave to the larger of the two Buddhas, \u201cSalsal,\u201d which translates to \u201cthe light shines through the universe.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoieamnb00073b6qa4tm1nyd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI hope this work becomes a site of inquiry and memory,\u201d Nguyen said of his 27-foot-tall sandstone monument. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t intended to speak about this moment, but unfortunately it does resonate with what is happening in today\u2019s wars.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026-04-24t181151z-2125827318-rc2pvkazkzns-rtrmadp-3-art-new-york-buddah.JPG\" alt=\"Vietnamese American artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen, who lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City, pictured beside his artwork in New York on Friday.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoieamnb00083b6q0a56uhn7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His sculpture is not an exact replica of either of the Bamiyan Buddhas but is largely made of the same material: carved sandstone. The original Buddhas\u2019 hands were destroyed centuries ago in an earlier act of iconoclasm; Nguyen has created two monumental steel hands that float slightly away from the sandstone limbs, supported by tall rods. They make gestures symbolizing fearlessness and compassion, and are cast from melted-down artillery shells sourced from Afghanistan \u2014 a process connected to Nguyen\u2019s artistic practice of turning unexploded ordinances from the Vietnam War into vessels of memory and healing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoieamnb00093b6qo9l70ssx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are so many parallels between the US wars in Afghanistan and Vietnam,\u201d Nguyen said. \u201cMaterials are so important to my projects. We looked into sourcing sandstone from Pakistan, but it was too complicated. This was cast and carved in Vietnam then shipped here.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoieamnb000a3b6qiwomnn78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The contrast between the earthy, organic sandstone of \u201cThe Light That Shines Through the Universe\u201d and the industrial steel, concrete and glass of its setting evokes a slightly surreal sense of time travel. \u201cThere\u2019s something so striking and evocative about seeing a sculpture made of sandstone,\u201d said Cecilia Alemani, the director and chief curator of the High Line Art program. \u201cIt\u2019s not something we\u2019re used to seeing in contemporary art \u2014 it belongs to art history.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmoieamnb000b3b6qkb7vemj5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both Nguyen and Alemani said that when the sculpture was first proposed in 2023, the Taliban\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/08\/16\/middleeast\/taliban-control-afghanistan-explained-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">return to power<\/a> two years earlier and Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 were top of mind.
