WASHINGTON \u2014 The Department of Justice indicted a\u00a0former senior adviser<\/a>\u00a0to Dr. Anthony Fauci on Tuesday for allegedly concealing records amid probes into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

David Morens, 78, has been\u00a0charged with conspiracy against the United States<\/a>; destruction, alteration, or falsification of records in federal investigations; concealment, removal, or mutilation of records; and aiding and abetting.<\/p>\n

The indictment, unsealed Monday in Maryland federal court, also lists two unnamed co-conspirators who \u201cconcealed, removed, destroyed and caused the concealment, and removal of federal records to evade FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] and FRA [Federal Records Act].\u201d<\/p>\n

Morens, who served as a senior advisor to Fauci<\/a> from 2006 to 2022, conducted\u00a0official government business from a private email account and asked\u00a0the National Institutes of Health\u2019s (NIH) FOIA liaison for tips on how to evade records requests, according to communications\u00a0first exposed by The Post<\/a>\u00a0in May 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201c[T]here is no worry about FOIAs. I can either send stuff to Tony on his private gmail [sic], or hand it to him at work or at his house,\u201d Morens wrote in one April 21, 2021, email. \u201cHe is too smart to let colleagues send him stuff that could cause trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two months prior, Morens said in a Feb. 24 email:\u00a0\u201c[I] learned from our foia [sic] lady here how to make emails disappear after I am foia\u2019d [sic] but before the search starts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlus I deleted most of those earlier emails after sending them to gmail [sic],\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

On Sept. 9, 2021, Morens wrote that\u00a0he would \u201calways communicate on gmail [sic] because my NIH email is FOIA\u2019d constantly\u201d and \u201cdelete anything I don\u2019t want to see in the New York Times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morens oversaw a now-infamous grant from NIH to the Manhattan-based nonprofit EcoHealth Alliance<\/a> beginning in 2014 that ended up funneling US taxpayer dollars to the Wuhan Institute of Virology for bat coronavirus research.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese\u00a0allegations represent a profound abuse of trust<\/a>\u00a0at a time when the American people needed it most \u2014 during the height of a global pandemic,\u201d Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche<\/a> said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs alleged in the indictment, Dr. Morens and his co-conspirators deliberately concealed information and falsified records in an effort to suppress alternative theories regarding the origins of COVID-19<\/a>.
