Inside Charlotte Moss’s Auction of Art and DesignCourtesy of Stair Auctions / Charlotte Moss

Virginia native Charlotte Moss has built a distinguished career designing residences for an elite clientele, with projects spanning the Hamptons, Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and Palm Beach. Known for her refined, historically informed approach to interiors, Moss has also authored numerous books on design and entertaining—more than ten to date—and is a frequent lecturer on the decorative arts. Her forthcoming title, Charlotte Moss at Home in Virginia, is expected to further explore her Southern roots and personal aesthetic.

Now, a significant portion of her personal collection is heading to auction. On April 29, Stair Galleries will present over 200 lots from Moss’s recently sold Upper East Side townhouse. Located on East 71st Street, the Queen Anne–style residence dates to the 19th century and is attributed to architect architect F.T. Camp. The six-story home, which includes fourteen rooms and five bedrooms, also features a private garden, something few Manhattan houses can boast having. It was listed for $14.5 million with Sotheby’s International Realty in 2023.

The sale offers a rare glimpse into Moss’s signature style: a layered, maximalist sensibility often associated with the legacy of tastemakers like Babe Paley. This renewed interest in traditional, richly detailed interiors is emerging (even as minimalist, downtown Carolyn Bessette Kennedy style retains its power further downtown).

Stair Galleries’ Hudson, New York location (previously the site of the widely-noted blockbuster Joan Didion estate auction in 2022) will host the event, drawing collectors eager to acquire pieces that reflect Moss’s polished, timeless vision.
