{"id":213275,"date":"2026-04-28T22:58:44","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T22:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/213275\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T22:58:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T22:58:44","slug":"g-train-shutdown-would-devastate-small-businesses-in-greenpoint-locals-say-brooklyn-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/213275\/","title":{"rendered":"G train shutdown would \u2018devastate\u2019 small businesses in Greenpoint, locals say \u2022 Brooklyn Paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Small business owners in Greenpoint say the extensive G train shutdowns reportedly scheduled for the rest of the year would be \u201cdevastating\u201d for their already-tight margins.<\/p>\n<p>G train service will be shut down between Bed-Stuy and Greenpoint for ten weekends through 2026, according to local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/more-g-train-service-disruptions-june-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">elected officials<\/a> briefed by the MTA, including three weekends each in June and December. Overnight weekday closures are on the schedule, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MTA is doing track work in the summer every single weekend,\u201d said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso at a press conference on Tuesday. \u201cTheir lack of assessment or terrible job of assessing exactly what the issues are with the G train make it so that they come back every single year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After dealing with extensive closures during the summers of 2024 and 2025, locals are frustrated. The MTA provides shuttle buses to replace the G during shutdowns, but they don\u2019t fill the train\u2019s shoes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-242019 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/55236956085_adaa98daf3_k.jpg\" alt=\"reynoso g train\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\"  \/>Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso criticized the MTA\u2019s work plans. Photo courtesy of John McCarten\/NYC Council Media Unit<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Small businesses] simply cannot thrive when people don\u2019t come to the neighborhood,\u201d said Council Member Lincoln Restler. \u201cAnd when the G train is shut down, nobody comes to Greenpoint. They just won\u2019t make the trip.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Despeaux owns Awoke Vintage, which has two locations in Greenpoint, both right off the G train.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Many retail stores in the city, including Awoke, are \u201clucky\u201d if they break even on weekdays and actually make money on weekends, she said. Losing business during the shop\u2019s \u201conly profitable time \u2026 will be beyond a devastating hit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have already weathered the storm of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynpaper.com\/bk-commuters-frustration-g-train-summer-shutdown\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-week shutdown<\/a> from the MTA, and we were promised that was going to be the end of it, assured that our businesses were a priority, and that\u2019s why this work was being done,\u201d Despeaux said. \u201cThat, obviously, was not the case, and we\u2019re now asked to weather and endure another storm that in this current retail economy, I do not know if that is possible to weather.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-242016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_9458.jpg\" alt=\"CBTC sign\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>The G train has been subject to regular shutdowns for modernization work. Photo by Kirstyn Brendlen<\/p>\n<p>The G was shuttered in sections during the summers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/nyc-transit\/g-train-full-service-restored-summer-shutdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2024<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/press-release\/mta-announces-additional-g-line-signal-modernization-work-summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">2025<\/a> as the MTA installed Communications-Based Train Control. Some CBTC work is still underway \u2014 and the G has been subject to periodic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/article\/service-changes-g-line-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">service changes<\/a> \u2014 but the upcoming shutdown is due to a different issue, according to MTA chair and CEO Janno Lieber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turns out that tunnel under Newtown Creek between Greenpoint and Long Island City needs a lot more work than was originally thought,\u201d Lieber said at an unrelated press conference on Tuesday. \u201cThat is the reason why we are having to do extra weekend shutdowns to get the work done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Restler\u2019s office said the schedule shared by the MTA includes full shutdowns between Bedford-Nostrand Avenues and Court Square on the weekends of June 6, 13 and 20; August 8 and 15; September 12; and December 5, 12 and 19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The dates are subject to change, and have yet been confirmed by the MTA.\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-242018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/54365379003_425848dfbc_c.webp.jpeg\" alt=\"g train\" width=\"700\" height=\"499\"  \/>The train is a critical connection for Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Hermann\/MTA\n<\/p>\n<p>Lieber said the issues in the tunnel were indicative of \u201cgenerations of neglect\u201d of transit infrastructure, and that some weekend closures are necessary to get the work done.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keith Sirchio, co-owner of Little Tiffin restaurant on Manhattan Avenue, said he worries about his employees getting home late at night without the train, and about the time it takes for customers to get to and from the restaurant. The bus isn\u2019t always reliable, he said, especially at night.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Little Tiffin spent a lot of money and time on an outdoor dining permit, Sirchio said. A lot of customers travel in from other neighborhoods, but without the means to do so, the effort might not generate the revenue they hoped for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The MTA has not yet confirmed the shutdown schedule for the rest of the year.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Council Member Lincoln Restler said he and other local pols are frustrated by the MTA\u2019s lack of communication.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-242012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/55236956025_f8fa65345a_6k.jpg\" alt=\"g train sign\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\"  \/>Greenpointers urged the MTA to reconsider shutdown plans.
