King Charles III and Queen Camilla are expected to kick off their trip to New York City on Wednesday with a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9\/11 Memorial & Museum, as the royals continue their four-day state visit to the United States.<\/p>\n
The morning ceremony in Lower Manhattan, set to include Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other officials, will commemorate victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The royals are expected to meet with victims\u2019 families. <\/p>\n
British officials said the trip was planned to allow the king and queen to spend time outside the nation\u2019s capital. Charles spent the first two days of the trip in Washington, where he emphasized the durability of U.S.-British ties despite recent strains over the war in Iran. He met privately with President Trump, addressed Congress and attended a state dinner.<\/p>\n
In his speech to Congress on Tuesday, Charles noted that NATO had invoked Article 5,<\/a> which commits member states in the alliance to collective defense, to help defend the United States after the Sept. 11 attacks. He also said that the United Nations Security Council had been \u201cunited in the face of terror.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe answered the call together \u2014 as our people have done so for more than a century, shoulder to shoulder,\u201d he said, citing conflicts from the world wars to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n That reference was part of the king\u2019s effort to underscore the value of the trans-Atlantic alliance, at a time when Europeans have increasing doubts<\/a> that Mr. Trump remains committed to NATO and its collective defense pledge.<\/p>\n After the Sept. 11 event on Wednesday, Charles is expected to visit Harlem Grown<\/a>, a nonprofit in Upper Manhattan that oversees community gardens and teaches children about urban farming, sustainability and nutrition. He will also attend a U.S.-British trade event.<\/p>\n Separately, Camilla is expected to visit the New York Public Library\u2019s main branch for a reception and a panel hosted by Jenna Bush Hager<\/a>, a co-host of NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d show. The panelists will include the novelists Harlan Coben<\/a> and Min Jin Lee<\/a>.<\/p>\n At the library, Camilla will also meet with representatives of domestic violence charities and tour a permanent collection that includes teddy bears believed to have inspired the English author A.A.
