{"id":215041,"date":"2026-04-30T03:51:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T03:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/215041\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T03:51:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T03:51:12","slug":"dot-releases-new-vision-for-park-ave-transforming-busy-roads-into-pedestrian-paradise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/215041\/","title":{"rendered":"DOT releases new vision for Park Ave. \u2014 transforming busy roads into pedestrian paradise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Manhattan thoroughfare Park Avenue will be reimagined as a pedestrian-friendly destination with a walkable greenspace down its center \u2014 complete with benches and maybe even a bike lane, according to new renderings released Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Images released by the Department of Transportation and Mayor Zohran Mamdani showed the busy Midtown traffic magnet turned into an oasis for walkers \u2013 with a nod to its 20th century roots.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPark Ave. got its name because a century ago it had a literal park in the median,\u201d city Comptroller Mark Levine wrote in a post to X Wednesday, sharing a vintage photo of Park Avenue before its sprawling medians were thinned out for through traffic.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.54449472;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39231182\" width=\"911\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/rendering-one-proposed-redesigns-park-126630765.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of a proposed redesign for Park Avenue with green medians, bike lanes, and reduced car lanes.\" class=\"wp-image-39231182\"  \/>New renderings for a revamped Park Avenue corridor were released by the DOT Wednesday, showing the bustling thoroughfare reimagined as more pedestrian-friendly. Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and Planners<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow at last, the park is coming back,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Two versions of a plan for an 11-block stretch of the busy boulevard \u2014 spanning from East 46th to East 57th streets \u2014 depict expanded medians, wider sidewalks and an abundance of greenery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal in this redesign is to put the park back into Park Avenue, and we want to transform Midtown Manhattan by providing residents and visitors alike with more usable public space,\u201d the at an unrelated press conference Wednesday in The Bronx.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/27\/us-news\/nyc-ny-politics-live-updates-on-zohran-mamdani-governors-race-more-april-27-28-29-30\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Follow live updates on Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s socialist agenda and the latest in NYC politics<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both redesign plans remove one travel lane in each direction \u2013 making way for the wider medians and potentially a bike lane.
