A formal royal visit turned unexpectedly lighthearted, at least according to one interpretation. When Queen Camilla and Melania Trump were seated together during a rain-soaked White House welcome, cameras captured a brief exchange between them. Though the audio was unclear, a lip reader has since suggested the queen made a humorous remark rooted in British slang.

Queen Camilla shares private and British joke with Melania Trump during US visit, per lip reader

The exchange reportedly took place as Queen Camilla and Melania Trump sat together during the royal couple’s arrival at the White House. The day was marked by rainy weather, which appeared to set the tone for their brief conversation. According to lip reader Nicola Hickling, the queen first commented on the conditions, allegedly saying, “Oh, it’s rather wet.” Trump is said to have agreed, replying, “It certainly is,” before the two shared a laugh (via Daily Mail).

The moment that followed is what has captured the most attention. The lip reader claims Camilla then joked, “We shall have soggy bottoms.” The term is widely recognized by fans of “The Great British Bake Off” and typically refers to a baking mishap. That said, it can also carry a more literal meaning.

As per the same interpretation, Trump appeared slightly puzzled and asked for clarification, reportedly repeating, “Soggy bottom?” The exchange suggests a brief cultural crossover moment, with the queen’s humor landing in a uniquely British way. However, as with all lip-reading claims, the exact wording cannot be independently verified.

Despite the rainy start, the tone of the visit remained cordial. The two women later appeared together at a spouses’ event on the White House grounds. The program included interactive exhibits for children, featuring virtual experiences of iconic U.K. landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and Stonehenge.

Trump also showcased initiatives tied to her “Be Best” campaign, focusing on youth engagement with technology. She was seen trying on Ray-Ban’s Meta glasses to explore art displays, while Camilla observed nearby.

A formal royal visit turned unexpectedly lighthearted, at least according to one interpretation.
