{"id":216090,"date":"2026-04-30T23:38:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T23:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/216090\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T23:38:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T23:38:09","slug":"news-12-bronx-family-grieves-loss-of-bronx-high-school-senior-weeks-before-graduation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/216090\/","title":{"rendered":"News 12 | Bronx | Family Grieves Loss Of Bronx High School Senior Weeks Before Graduation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">A Bronx family is grieving the loss of a 17-year-old high school senior who was <a data-rich-text-hyperlink=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/bronx.news12.com\/17-year-old-boy-fatally-stabbed-in-soundview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatally stabbed in Parkchester<\/a>, just weeks before his graduation.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Police say Jonathan Melo was attacked around 4:30 p.m. outside 1337 Beach Ave. He was stabbed in the back and rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">His mother, Raquel Melo, says she is struggling to understand how her son never made it home.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cI want everybody to know my son was a really good kid,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Family members describe Jonathan as the \u201clight\u201d of their lives, a teenager who stayed out of trouble and was looking forward to finishing high school.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cHe\u2019s kinda like the light of the family\u2026 he could do no wrong in my eyes,\u201d his mother said.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">What should have been a time of celebration has now turned into heartbreak. Jonathan was just weeks away from graduation \u2014 a milestone his family says has now been replaced by grief.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Adding to the tragedy, Jonathan\u2019s father is currently out of the country for his own mother\u2019s funeral and is now returning to the Bronx to plan his son\u2019s burial.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cI just want his diploma,\u201d Raquel Melo said.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Police sources say investigators believe the suspect may live near an alleyway behind the scene of the crime, but no arrests have been made.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Neighbors describe the block as shaken and uneasy in the aftermath of the violence.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Jonathan leaves behind his parents, three siblings and a girlfriend.
