Now, a tattoo of a child forever 15, as his family held Pierre\u2019s funeral in East Elmhurst Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cJaden\u2019s mom, she\u2019s doing the best she can. The family\u2019s trying to hold together, but we\u2019re a strong family,\u201d Washington said.<\/p>\n
Police say Pierre was surrounded and attacked by a group at Roy Wilkins Park in St. Albans last month, then shot and killed.<\/p>\n
They say the accused shooter and alleged gang member, 18-year-old Zahir Davis, fled to the island of Jamaica.<\/p>\n
The NYPD worked with the teen\u2019s father to bring him back.<\/p>\n
That anger was raw and loud days after the shooting, as Davis walked out of the precinct station house.<\/p>\n
The family called in Street Corner Resources, an organization born out of concern over gun violence and gang activity, to help carry a grief this deep.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe shooting was almost execution-style, and that alarmed me,\u201d CEO and Founder of Street Corner Resources Iesha Sekou said.<\/p>\n
To Pierre\u2019s uncle, he was more than how he died.<\/p>\n
\u201cNever says no, always ready to learn, athletic. Had so many things going on for him,\u201d Washington said.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s what made this community show up Friday.<\/p>\n
Sekou says showing up has to mean more than mourning.<\/p>\n
\u201cParents need to kind of hone in, check out what\u2019s happening with [their] kids from A to Z,\u201d Sekou said. \u201cI want to say thank you to everybody in the community that has come together … but we really have to come together more often. It can be just because of what happened with my nephew. It\u2019s got to be to save all of the kids in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Washington, saving kids also means being honest about accountability for the person who took his nephew\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not angry at him. I\u2019m personally not angry at him, but he has to learn. You walk those streets, you do what you do, now you got to suffer the consequences,\u201d Washington said.<\/p>\n
Washington says there is no justice because his nephew is being buried, and Davis is in jail.<\/p>\n
