{"id":217915,"date":"2026-05-02T22:31:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T22:31:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/217915\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T22:31:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T22:31:31","slug":"the-house-that-eggo-waffles-built-is-a-wacky-bay-area-car-wash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/217915\/","title":{"rendered":"The house that Eggo waffles built is a wacky Bay Area car wash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first feeling that courses through my veins is that of complete surrender when I turn into the Delta Queen car wash on a recent Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh s\u2014t,\u201d I say aloud as I pull in, realizing that there\u2019s no turning back now, at least not without colliding with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/tech\/article\/drew-magary-cybertruck-review-sf-19561381.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tesla Cybertruck<\/a> in my wake. I quickly pick one of three lanes and lurch forward, a row of American flags dutifully billowing over my rental car.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Campbell auto spa about 50 miles south of San Francisco is designed as a replica of the <a href=\"https:\/\/museumships.us\/other\/delta-queen\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20th century Mississippi riverboat of the same name<\/a>. It sticks out like a sore thumb amid its surrounding environment: nondescript mattress stores and florists; the lone husk of an abandoned Hooters. Wooden\u00a0plankways surround the behemoth that stands three stories high, with brass portholes and a duo of smokestacks jutting toward the gray sky. Flanked by its own cafe, gift shop and duck pond, with a koi fish-shaped fountain thrown in for good measure, it\u2019s equal parts alluring and inexplicable \u2014 at least to the unsuspecting passerby.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>When I spotted it for the first time on a drive to San Jose a few months ago, looming over everything else on East Hamilton Avenue, I was mystified. There were suds, sprays and scrubbing. Within a few minutes, I exit the tunnel through the Queen\u2019s stern feeling sort of underwhelmed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was, well, a car wash.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/travel\/article\/california-sign-gains-historical-designation-18472122.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rare survivor of a novelty era<\/a> \u2014 a long-lasting symbol of midcentury car culture that was once ubiquitous across the Bay Area, promising to make everyday life easier and maybe make its customers feel as though they had been transported somewhere else along the way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Delta Queen car wash was the first of its kind. And we have a frozen waffle empire and a former NASA artist to thank.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Fantasy is a common response to technology\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In 1986, a wire story from the Associated Press detailed the allure of the \u201ctheme\u201d wash craze taking over the South Bay, including the Delta Queen and its similarly eclectic counterparts. Listed among them were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DFZFhhRTQU0\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bird Bath car wash<\/a> in Fremont, which featured 50 live birds such as cockatoos and parrots, some of which would \u201cland on you and talk to you\u201d if you entered the viewing room. Robertsville Corner, run by the same proprietors of the Delta Queen, drew customers in with decorative antique farm equipment and gasoline pumps, hawking a wide range of merchandise ranging from $1,500 grandfather clocks to Cabbage Patch dolls. The introduction of portable music had recently arrived with the invention of the Sony Walkman. And people were just beginning to adopt the use of cellphones \u2014 two-pound, $4,000 bricks that only offered about 30 minutes of talk time on a 10-hour charge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Car washes have been around since 1914 and likely saw a shift to the more eccentric in response to the Space Age aesthetic of the 1950s that was reflected in diners, gas stations and motels. But to Berger, there was something more philosophical to the experience: an unconscious \u201cbaptism\u201d disguised as a common chore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[This] is how people deal with their anxieties over science and power,\u201d he said. \u201cThe theme park cleansing place is to auto washing what science fiction is to science. If something is ugly, unpleasant, you change it around so people see it as something pleasant.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Late owner Frank Dorsa described the Delta Queen as \u201cthe birthplace of the lavish car wash,\u201d in the words of the Associated Press. He and his wife, Marilyn, were inspired to create it while he was running a different car wash out of a \u201csterile metal building\u201d in Los Gatos. The Delta Queen was built for $350,000, money that likely came from the invention the entrepreneur and his brothers, Sam and Anthony, came up with back in 1953: the frozen Eggo waffle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The trio had started a mayonnaise business in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leggomyeggo.com\/en_US\/about-us.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">their mother\u2019s San Jose kitchen in 1936<\/a>, calling it \u201cEggo\u201d to emphasize their use of fresh eggs. They eventually moved on to potato chips and later, powdered waffle mix. It was Frank who developed a \u201cwaffle iron carousel\u201d \u2014 a merry-go-round-like contraption capable of mass-producing waffles, which could then be frozen, packaged and toasted. His goal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/24\/automobiles\/a-wash-a-wax-a-little-show-biz.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to a 2004 article in the New York Times<\/a>, was to build a car wash in a lot that was too narrow for the standard tunnel. In came his unconventional solution of the long and skinny wash in the shape of a steamboat. In a 1977 interview with the Los Gatos Times, Dorsa said it turned out over 1,000 cars on the average Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On my recent visit, it appeared not much has changed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Exploring the grounds<\/p>\n<p>The establishment is completely packed with bumper-to-bumper traffic, especially for a Monday at 11 a.m. with rain in the forecast \u2014 mostly commuters on their lunch breaks from nearby office parks. An employee tells me the line moves quickly, and the Delta Queen can wash up to 80 cars per hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With a now-clean vehicle of my own, I decide to explore the grounds. Fish swim in a murky pond, where you can insert a quarter into a machine for pellets to feed them. There are ducks harkening back to a dark past \u2014 in 2005, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/campbell-duck-massacre-caught-on-videotape-2616973.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Chronicle reported<\/a> the car wash was offering a $200 reward for the identification of a man in his late teens or early 20s who deliberately ran over and killed 10 of the car wash\u2019s feathered friends with his red Acura Integra. I peek at employees walking in and out of various rooms on the upper deck, which I\u2019m surprised to find is actually functional, with what looks like offices, storage space and room for equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>I duck into the dimly lit cafe, which smells strongly of bacon potato soup that does not appear on the menu. Hot dogs lazily twirl on a roller as I scan the options, mostly cafeteria fare. Shuddering to think of what could happen if I were to drink a 24-ounce \u201cRed Bull Blendz,\u201d I order a panini (sliced grilled chicken breast, roasted red pepper, provolone and basil pesto, $10.99) with a Mango Monsoon smoothie ($6.75), a last-minute decision over a Mocha Lisa ($5.99). I sit at the waterfront and dive into my satisfying yet unremarkable spread, taking a photo of the surreal view and sharing it to my Instagram story. Within a few minutes, a friend replies: \u201cNot me thinking this was Disneyland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a certain theme park air to the place, I think as I finish my lunch next to a phone booth photo op and wander into the Queen\u2019s Chest gift shop. It has a 200-gallon freshwater fish tank inside called \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Tank\u201d and what I can only describe as a vast array of wine mom fare. There are rotating displays of bedazzled ball caps, chunky costume jewelry and tea towels emblazoned with phrases like \u201cworking on my six pack\u201d and \u201cdrink responsibly, don\u2019t spill.\u201d There\u2019s a long line of customers inside, but they all appear to be picking up their cars after an interior cleaning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I wondered what it took to run such a well-oiled machine. Unfortunately, the current management of Classic Car Wash declined my request for an interview. Over the past 40 years, he tells me, people have been more interested in his world-renowned work with NASA and Atari, \u201cespecially the gamesters.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Born in San Jose and now residing in Los Gatos, Guidice started working as an artist at the age of 16, sketching illustrations for a local architectural firm before attending Academy of Art College (now Academy of Art University) in San Francisco and pursuing a freelance career. In 1970, he captured the attention of the aeronautics agency, where he spent 15 years producing full-color paintings of various space missions and later, renderings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/retrofuturistic-nasa-space-art\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what human space colonies could look like<\/a>, many of which are now on display at NASA\u2019s Ames Research Center.<\/p>\n<p>Guidice was also illustrating some of the earliest game covers for Atari\u00a0 \u2014 Space War, Street Racer and Casino \u2014 which had its first big hit with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/bay-area-roots-pong-atari-17824939.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pong<\/a> in 1972. The Sunnyvale video game giant was where he met his wife and fellow artist, Susan Jaekel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NASA work was starting to dry up by the time Guidice was contacted by Dorsa. The entrepreneur told him he had seen a cocktail bar that reminded him of a riverboat. Guidice recognized Frank and Marilyn Dorsa, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillbilly-music.com\/artists\/story\/index.php?id=14377\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artist and entertainer in her own right,<\/a> as visionaries who wanted to make the car wash a destination rather than a stopover.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really hadn\u2019t been done before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dorsa landed on the location for the Delta Queen because a car wash had previously operated there, and while it had been abandoned for a while, the use permit was still historic for the site, according to Guidice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the grand opening, 200 or 300 people must have shown up, he said. That car wash was successful, too, motivating Dorsa to launch a franchise program with 15 new car washes across the U.S. Guidice said he processed every permit, recounting locations in Morgan Hill, Cathedral City, Santa Rosa, Carmel, Santa Barbara, Dallas, Fort Worth, Phoenix, Austin and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But none of them were quite like the Delta Queen. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen anything like it before or since,\u201d Guidice said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It became an experience\u2019<\/p>\n<p>ShaVolla Rodriguez, the curator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calautomuseum.org\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California Automobile Museum<\/a> in Sacramento, said the rapid emergence of novelty car washes across the U.S. rose out of necessity. In most cases, the husband had a car he would drive to work, and the wife would get behind the wheel of the \u201cgrocery getter,\u201d she said. A man in a Bass Pro Shop T-shirt stared at the ducks.
