May 4 (Reuters) – Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was recovering from pneumonia on Monday and remained hospitalized \u200cin critical but stable condition, according to his spokesperson.<\/p>\n
Giuliani, 81, \u200ccame to global prominence in 2001 as he led New York’s recovery from \u200bthe September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center towers, which his spokesperson said led to him developing restrictive airway disease.<\/p>\n
“This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his \u200cbody, requiring mechanical ventilation to \u2060maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition,” spokesperson Ted Goodman said in a post on X.<\/p>\n
He added \u2060that Giuliani was now breathing on his own.<\/p>\n
Guiliani was hospitalized at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he lives, according \u200bto a \u200bperson familiar with the matter \u200band the Palm Beach Post. \u200cHe was admitted there on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Giuliani’s later failed quest to overturn President Donald Trump’s 2020 election defeat tarnished his image as “America’s Mayor”, earned for his 2001 response to the al Qaeda attack.<\/p>\n
The 2020 effort led to criminal charges against Giuliani in two U.S. states \u200cand a defamation lawsuit from election workers. \u200bGiuliani has denied wrongdoing in the \u200bcriminal cases.<\/p>\n
New York’s current \u200bMayor Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat, on Monday wished Giuliani \u200ca steady recovery.<\/p>\n
“He’s been a fixture \u200bin our city’s \u200bpolitics and public life for so many years. And I know that many New Yorkers are concerned by the reports \u200bthat he’s in \u200ccritical condition,” Mamdani said.<\/p>\n
