After arriving at the office this morning, I popped open the cardboard clamshell containing a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich from Eggy\u2019s Place. The distinctive aroma of food-truck goodness wafted to a colleague two cubicles over.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhoever is eating something, that smells amazing,\u201d he exclaimed.<\/p>\n
Whatever is beyond amazing, that\u2019s the taste of a BEC from Eggy\u2019s, which opened for the season in late April. I suppose the eponymous owner has a legal name, but he\u2019s been called Eggy since his breakfast days at the former Quintessence in Albany. Eggy started serving from a vintage food truck\u00a0\u2014 which he swears is still\u00a0drivable\u00a0\u2014 in 2004. It\u2019s parked in the same place in Albany\u2019s warehouse district, at the corner of Eric Boulevard and North Lawrence Street. Understating the matter, it is not the most scenic spot for outdoor dining, flanked as it is by railroad tracks, I-787 and the tenacious, hulking monstrosity that is the doomed but very much still standing Central Warehouse.<\/p>\n
Eggy\u2019s sandwiches smell as they always have, and the taste\u00a0\u2014 bacon plenty crisp, sausage just the right combination of juicy and greasy\u00a0\u2014 is instantly identifiable as an Eggywich. There\u2019s a real what-the-hell attitude to Eggy and Eggy\u2019s Place. He can\u2019t be bothered with nonessential chatter. When I questioned him once about how many eggs he cooks a week, it drew a terse, \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d and a refusal to estimate. When a TV crew showed up this morning and wanted video of him, which is a definite no-no, he told me that he replied with colorful dismissal of nosy media.<\/p>\n
Eggy\u2019s Place is open weekdays, closed on Saturday and Sunday. Hours officially start at 7 a.m., but if you show up a little earlier, he\u2019ll still serve you. Lunch starts at 11 and ends at 1:30 p.m. Said Eggy, \u201cPut 1:30ish.\u201d OK, done: It\u2019s 1:30ish.<\/p>\n
You can see last year\u2019s lunch menu\u00a0here<\/a>. A two-egg breakfast sandwich with cheese and choice of meat costs $8.33, or $9.75 with coffee. Meat options include bacon, sausage, kielbasa, ham, beef bologna, salami and pulled pork. Call 518-577-3663 when you\u2019re about 10 minutes away to order ahead.
