Dr. Straub, the scholar of international relations? Or simply Dan, the neighbor you might run into at a local meeting?

“They just call me Dan,” he said.

At 60 years old, after a 41-year career in the U.S. Navy, Straub is navigating a transition that is as much about identity as it is about geography.

Straub is what the Navy calls a “Mustang” — a sailor who enlisted straight out of high school in 1983 and rose through the ranks to become a captain, commanding warships and later advising the government as Division Chief for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia on the Joint Staff.

While his resume includes high-stakes operational successes, Straub said his leadership style was forged in the trenches.

“I learned that if you are going to be leading men and women, then you need to know the job they are doing and the challenges they face,” Straub said. For him, leadership was never about the authority of the rank, but about communicating the purpose behind it. “If they understand the why, then they’re going to follow you,” he said.

Read More: Great Neck school board race set with two incumbents, two challengers

The pursuit of that “why” led Straub beyond the deck of a ship and into the classroom. Over the years, he built his education alongside his military career—starting with night classes while on shore duty, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Penn State, then a master’s in international relations while teaching at an ROTC unit at Boston University, and eventually completing a doctorate in security studies at the Naval Postgraduate School.

He often found himself bridging two worlds: facing physical storms at sea and the intellectual complexities of national strategy. To help his crew understand their place in the world, he taught political science courses on board so sailors could earn college credits while at sea. “Ultimately, the goal was to help the sailors understand the broader mission and the broader goals of the United States,” he said.

A ‘Mustang’ who rose from enlisted sailor to warship commander, Straub retired in 2025 and now calls Great Neck home.Photo provided by Daniel Straub

When Straub moved to Great Neck in 2020 to serve as director of Naval Science at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, he arrived at an unusual moment. The pandemic had emptied streets and sidewalks, making it difficult for him to get a feel for the neighborhood. “It was a time when nobody was outside,” he said.

When life in the neighborhood picked up again, Straub began to see what sets Great Neck apart. It is one of the most diverse communities he has ever called home, and he views that not as a challenge, but as a strength.“It’s important that we recognize people’s differences. Those differences are actually value added to any community,” he said.

Now retired, Straub said the mix of cultures and backgrounds in Great Neck is unlike anywhere he lived during his 41-year career, and something he has come to value deeply.

He recognizes that for many neighbors, current global tensions aren’t just news—they are personal sources of stress. To this, the strategist offers a steadying hand. “Good leadership in a community is understanding our common purpose,” Straub said. He points to the fundamental goals that unite his neighbors: “We want a safe community. We want our children being taught things that are valuable. I think everybody feels that way.” He believes that by identifying these shared ends, the community can navigate even the most divisive times.

His advice for resolving the world’s current conflicts is rooted in a strategic sense of patience. Drawing on his experience negotiating with the Chinese military on the South China Sea, he noted that quick fixes rarely hold. “If something was developed over time, that was the way things lasted because everybody could agree,” he said. He advocates for the slow, complex work of listening and negotiating—the same diplomacy he practiced when ships faced off in contested waters.

Ultimately, Straub believes the way forward is through finding common ground rather than reacting to the noise of the moment. He encourages neighbors to seek out solutions that prioritize long-term stability and open communication. “More war doesn’t answer the questions,” he said. “We have to find a way to get back to diplomacy.”

Read More: 3 Great Neck seniors awarded National Merit corporate scholarships

Despite his global perspective, Straub’s focus has recently narrowed to the few square feet of his own property line. That shift became clear in a friendship with a neighbor two doors down.
“He’s the one who made me say, this is the place for us,” Straub said of his neighbor, Bob.

What followed were the kinds of interactions that rarely make headlines but define a community: helping with home projects, keeping an eye on each other’s homes, and lending a hand when needed. “It’s truly neighborly stuff,” he said, noting that they work on each other’s mowers and watch each other’s pets.

Retired Navy Captain Daniel Straub stands in Great Neck Estate Park. The transition to civilian life hasn’t been without its hurdles; he admits that life without a rigid Navy schedule can feel “challenging” and “rudderless” at times.

“I don’t have anyone telling me what my mission is, so I have to develop it on my own,” he said.

That new mission involves a deep commitment to being present. Whether it is washing dishes at home, helping a neighbor install a security camera after a scare, or just sitting in at a village meeting, Straub is applying the discipline of a 40-year career to the streets of Great Neck. “It really comes down to being helpful and being there, being present for people when they need you,” he said.

After decades of moving from place to place, this sailor has found something that doesn’t require orders.
