Check out our conversation below.

Susannah & Colette , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Susannah Endfield Kandinov:
We were recently interviewed by a major network in my home, to present about myself and Maison Madison. It was a huge milestone in our career during the interview, although the interview was challenging, it made me realize how grateful I am to be in this business with Colette and building our Maison Madison together. You learn about yourselves in this moment, and we really did risk everything to structure this brand! Proud times on camera for us!

Colette Mahoney:
Recently we were nominated for a design award by an established trade association. To top it off we were one of three finalists who all had at least 20 years on us! It brought a lot of pride to see us nominated and sit amongst such established brands in our first three years of operating.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Susannah Endfield Kandinov:
Colette and I strive to build a brand about quality. We established Maison Madison in 2023, and started working on the brand in 2022. We both previously worked in the homewares industry, and Maison Madison was born out of us loving to host, set the table, and having a passion for fine dinnerware. We wanted to create a brand that was both affordable, hand crafted, and being made in Europe. We had already met in college, and worked on projects together in marketing class, and worked together in a homewares company before Maison Madison, so it felt natural for me to work with Colette. We both always want to build more, and expand where we can, while keeping our brand identity being the main theme, always resonating to quality, usable product, that also looks, beautiful! We use the product ourselves to know where we can improve on a daily basis.

Colette Mahoney:
I am one of the founders of Maison Madison, a dinnerware brand founded in New York and handmade in Portugal. My background originates in Business Studies where I met Susannah, and then pivoted to the art world where I worked with artists and curators to foster a cultural community in Beirut. I then moved to New York to join a burgeoning tequila start up with a primary role in sales which led me to a senior sales role at a British homewares company. After years of falling in love with the trade, Susannah and I founded Maison Madison to help bring joy back to setting the table and encourage the ritual of sharing meals. As the founder of a small start-up, I love that my role merges creativity and business in an industry that touches every part of my life. There are so many other areas I’d love to grow into as a lifestyle brand so the sky really is the limit.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Susannah Endfield Kandinov:
It’s a difficult question to answer, but I think quite a few people play this role in my life. Starting with my parents, and my father overall. Work ethic is very strong on both sides of my family, and I think both my parents both always worked hard. They brought this mentality to me when I was a child, if you want something go get it, nobody will hand this to you on a silver platter. Secondly, I think working along side Colette has always made me learn immensely about work, her and my father are the two people I ask first for advice about anything work related, and all have the same hungry work ethic. Always negotiate in every area possible, and especially about price and terms! I think it comes down to the type of personality you have as well, work does not always feel like work if you love it!

Colette Mahoney:
For the most part I had a very fortunate history of superiors who I took away learnings from that formed my current work ethic. My boss while managing an art residency in Beirut stands out as being one of the most impressionable people to me. Not only was it my first full time role but it was in a start-up setting with the most ideal start-up leader. She instilled a very entrepreneurial attitude in me by always seeking new ideas and never saying no. We built a robust presence within the impenetrable art community that was rare to achieve for twenty-somethings, and I really took on the mindset that I could learn or try to learn anything as a result of her attitude and confidence in me.

Being a co-founder with someone has really pushed me to be more collaborative, and working alongside someone like Susannah who has such a different perspective to mine leads me to learn more about myself and have a different outlook on things I may have thought I was 100% firm on. Its essential to have someone to challenge your thinking to make your work ethic stronger, and I am fortunate to have a partner with such a complimentary approach to mine.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Susannah Endfield Kandinov:
BE PATIENT! One of the aspects I struggle with on a daily basis is being patient, and I learnt from my professional world is, patience really is a virtue! If you can be patient and believe you can do anything!

Colette Mahoney:
Don’t be afraid of trying things that might fail. Every experience will teach you something invaluable, try to trust and enjoy the process no matter what the outcome.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Susannah Endfield Kandinov:
Our industry is more frugal than people might think. Every decision we make is very much based on supply and demand, and in an economical way. A lot of the time our friends or fans might suggest us to add to our collection, with different materials, such as placemats, glassware, or silverware, which is challenging for a small independent business. We focus purely on ceramics, but do dream to do much more in the future!

Colette Mahoney:
Our industry is very much a relationship driven business.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Susannah Endfield Kandinov:
Stop stressing out! Stress eats your soul alive!

Colette Mahoney:
Stop using Chat GPT

Contact Info:

Ana Leal
Takamasa Ota

Suggest a Story: BoldJourney is built on recommendations from the community; it’s how we uncover hidden gems,
so if you or someone you know deserves recognition please let us know here.

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Susannah Endfield Kandinov & Colette Mahoney.
