Construction is expected to be completed in about 16 months following the issuance of the required permits. Funding comes from the State and City of New York, as well as from the organization’s own resources.

The President and CEO of Mount Sinai Queens, Dr. Cameron Hernandez, emphasized that the ICU expansion responds to real community needs. He said that behind this expansion are patients and their families who need critical care at the most vulnerable moments of their lives and that by increasing capacity, they will ensure that more people can receive timely care close to home.

According to hospital leadership, the new unit is expected to reduce congestion in Emergency Departments and limit the need to transfer patients to hospitals outside Queens, while also enhancing the institution’s ability to respond during periods of high demand or public health crises.

ICU Director Dr. Nazia Makhriki described the new facility as a substantial upgrade in how care is delivered, noting that it strengthens the institution’s ability to provide timely, highly specialized interventions with greater precision and responsiveness. She added that the investment enhances collaboration among medical teams and improves patient safety when it matters most.

The new ICU will be built on the sixth floor of the main building, converting underutilized space into a modern critical care environment. It will include, among other features, a dedicated Category 2 procedure room equipped for fluoroscopy-guided procedures, such as catheter placements and other interventions requiring immediate action.

New York State Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris announced $6 million in funding, stressing that residents of western Queens should not have to cross the river to receive high-quality healthcare.

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards noted that families in the area deserve immediate access to life-saving medical care within their community, adding that the new unit will ensure that residents of Astoria and greater Queens receive the critical care they need without delay.

Special mention was also made of the importance of families being close to patients. Former City Council Member Costa Constantinides, now head of the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens, said in a personal tone that the ability to receive care close to home provides invaluable support to families in difficult times, adding that the investment will bring meaningful relief to many families in the area.

Also in attendance was Dr. George Dangas, Director of Cardiovascular Innovation at the Cardiovascular Institute of the Mount Sinai Medical Center.

NEW YORK – As part of an investment aimed at strengthening the provision of critical medical care in…

[37
9,24,63,122,124,123
post-220559","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-queens","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-queens","tag-queens-headlines","tag-queens-news
["GET
