Gov. Kathy Hochul has floated a tax on expensive second homes in New York City<\/a> to generate extra revenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Albany-area Democratic state Sen. Pat Fahy has proposed a similar effort<\/a> to raise revenue for upstate municipalities. The bill number is S10197<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She spoke with Capital Tonight\u2019s Susan Arbetter about her proposed upstate pied-\u00e0-terre tax.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m seeing the needs everywhere and I went, you know what, let\u2019s have an opt-in for upstate, or outside of New York City, and let\u2019s have half of it go to Aid to Municipalities,\u201d Fahy told Capital Tonight. \u201cAIM aid\u201d provides unrestricted funds to municipalities.<\/p>\n

Fahy, who says that people are stopping her on the street to talk about the proposal, also commented on the Empire Center\u2019s critical take on the tax, which you can find here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The new floor for such a tax is $2.5 million. Fahy says the details are still being worked out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not an upstate North Country camp,\u201d Fahy said. \u201cThese are about the multimillion-dollar upstate investor homes that are largely unoccupied.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
