Zohran Mamdani might be the first mayor of New York ever elected by folks who oppose his agenda.<\/p>\n
The latest example: The United Bodegas of America endorsed the socialist wannabe Wednesday \u2014 even though it represents businessmen and workers who fear competition from the city-run groceries Mamdani\u2019s promised.<\/p>\n
And even though his defund-the-police plans may take a toll on their stores, and his $30-an-hour minimum wage devastate their bottom line.<\/p>\n
UBA president Radhames Rodriguez even admits he and his members are wary of the socialist\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n
Indeed, the group\u2019s founder, Fernando Mateo, actually resigned<\/a> over the endorsement, citing \u201chundreds of bodega owners\u201d who\u2019ve also expressed their anger over it.<\/p>\n \t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n Mamdani, fumes Mateo, \u201cis not looking out for the best interests of bodega workers or owners.\u201d<\/p>\n Presumably, Rodriguez and his allies simply see Mamdani as inevitable \u2014 and figure it\u2019s better to back a winner, in hopes he\u2019ll then soften an agenda they dread<\/a>.<\/p>\n They\u2019re not alone: Plenty of Wall Streeters have taken to the sidelines rather than antagonize the guy who seems likely to take over City Hall.<\/p>\n Democratic politicians, too, are jumping on the bandwagon despite their opposition to his policies.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve had our disagreements,\u201d admitted Gov. Kathy Hochul in her Mamdani endorsement op-ed column in The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n Rep. Hakeem Jeffries highlighted \u201careas of principled disagreement\u201d eve as he came on board at the last minute.<\/p>\n Assemblyman Micah Lasher similarly endorsed him \u201cin spite of deeply felt disagreements.\u201d<\/p>\n Mamdani\u2019s only sincere support comes from the far left \u2014 groups like his own Democratic Socialists of America, public-sector unions like 1199 SEIU and the CUNY faculty guild, as well as fellow radicals like Sen. Bernie Sanders and AOC.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n The United Federation of Teachers also endorsed him, as he means to roll back mayoral control of the schools, effectively putting UFT in charge.<\/p>\n But joining the Mamdani parade out of fear is beyond foolish: For starters, if these groups\u2019 members vote against him, he might not win.<\/p>\n And the overall damage he\u2019ll do if he does prevail \u2014 on crime, schools, taxes and more \u2014 will outweigh any special-interest favors.<\/p>\n Some Democrats \u2014 Rep. Tom Suozzi, former Gov.
