The award-winning artist who survived being shoved into a moving Manhattan train<\/a> heartbreakingly needed her mom to wipe away her tears at her attacker\u2019s sentencing Wednesday \u2014 after the senseless attack left her paralyzed from the shoulders down.<\/p>\n

Turkish born artist Emine Ozsoy<\/a>, 38, tore into DoorDash driver Kamal Semrade in Manhattan Supreme Court \u2014 who showed no signs of remorse and refused to apologize for forever changing her life and leaving her quadriplegic <\/a>after he threw her into a train at the 63rd Street and Lexington Avenue subway station in May 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am in this condition because of this evil action,\u201d Ozsoy said from a motorized wheelchair during her victim impact statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a long life ahead of me, yet I have to live with these circumstances,\u201d she tearfully added.<\/p>\n

Semrade, 42, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Manhattan Supreme Court Wednesday following his all-count conviction in March, where a jury convicted him on attempted murder and assault charges.<\/p>\n

Semrade\u2019s attorney, Michael Fineman, asked the judge for lenience when sentencing Semrade, citing his mental health problems that he\u2019s suffered for years.<\/p>\n

When given the chance to apologize to the victim, Semrade declined.<\/p>\n

Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Athlea Drysdale called the randomness of the attack \u201cprofoundly disturbing\u201d before noting Semrade\u2019s lack of remorse.<\/p>\n

Ozsoy called out her attacker for his \u201cevil action\u201d that left her disabled for life. Steven Hirsch for NY Post<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve waited to see you, Mr. Semrade, express a scintilla of remorse. None has been forthcoming,\u201d the judge said.<\/p>\n

According to prosecutors, Semrade boarded the same subway car as Ozsoy, who was on her way to work, at the Roosevelt Avenue stop in Queens on May 21, 2023.<\/p>\n

The pair, who did not know each other, exited the train at the 63rd Street and Lexington Avenue subway stop when Semrade walked behind the victim and shoved her by the head and neck into the side of a moving subway car, prosecutors said in court.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe victim was a complete stranger to the defendant,\u201d Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Katelyn Damanis seethed. \u201cShe had never met him, never spoken to him, never interacted with him to her knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ozsoy\u2019s face and head hit the train and she was flung back onto the platform and laid motionless on the platform.<\/p>\n
