Iran\u2019s government said today that it was reviewing an American plan to end the war<\/a>. Hours later, President Trump said that the two sides had engaged in \u201cvery good talks\u201d and indicated again that he was not in a rush to restart an active military conflict. \u201cNever a deadline,\u201d Trump told reporters.<\/p>\n

Both sides have offered contradictory messages<\/a>, and the optimism for a deal has yet to yield public results. But oil prices \u2014 which have been inflated thanks in large part to a shipping crisis in the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 fell significantly<\/a>. Still, experts expect energy prices more broadly to remain elevated.<\/p>\n

In the U.S., gasoline prices jumped again to a national average of $4.54 a gallon. (Here\u2019s a map<\/a> showing gas prices around the country.) The burden of the surging prices is falling hardest on lower-income Americans<\/a>, who, in March, spent much more on fuel despite reducing their consumption.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration sues Colorado over a gun law<\/p>\n

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit today accusing Colorado of violating the Second Amendment right to bear arms by outlawing high-capacity ammunition magazines<\/a>. The state law, which was passed after the 2012 mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., bans magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.<\/p>\n

Officials in the blue state accused the Trump administration of federal overreach. Yesterday, the Justice Department sued the state\u2019s capital, Denver, over a 1989 law banning assault weapons.<\/p>\n

The media mogul Ted Turner dies at 87<\/p>\n

Ted Turner, who altered the landscape of American media by creating CNN and revolutionizing the 24-hour news cycle, died today at 87.<\/p>\n

Turner often took astounding business risks, sometimes teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, only to roar back and multiply his fortune. He oversaw a vast empire of cable channels, captained the winning yacht in the 1977 America\u2019s Cup race, purchased the Atlanta Braves and, after marrying the actress and activist Jane Fonda, preached environmentalism. A new A.L.S. treatment helps some patients improve<\/p>\n

Three years ago, the F.D.A. conditionally approved the first therapy for a rare genetic form of A.L.S., even though its efficacy was uncertain. Now, some evidence is in, and it suggests that the drug, known as tofersen, is helping some A.L.S. patients get better and preventing others from getting worse.<\/p>\n

Such outcomes are remarkable for a disease that almost always causes continual decline and death<\/a>. \u201cIt tells us that A.L.S. is treatable,\u201d said a doctor conducting a trial of the drug.<\/p>\n

A new ballet that goes big<\/p>\n

For 22 years, Tiler Peck has dazzled audiences as a dancer with New York City Ballet. Now, in her emerging second career as a choreographer, she is pushing the company to go bigger<\/a>, in the style of City Ballet\u2019s founder, George Balanchine. \u201cFill the stage!\u201d Tiler said.<\/p>\n

She does that by using a cast of 40, the largest for a new classical work in her tenure with the company, for a dance that culminates with a heart-stopping finale. The performance, \u201cSymphonie Espagnole,\u201d will premiere tomorrow night.<\/p>\n

World Cup or bust for Argentina\u2019s die-hard fans<\/p>\n

Passion for soccer flows through the blood of many Argentines, who have always flocked to World Cups by the tens of thousands. Now, as this year\u2019s tournament in the U.S., Mexico and Canada approaches, they are finding it difficult to afford tickets.<\/p>\n

Prices for premier games are way up. And some Argentine fans told my colleagues that they were selling their cars or going into debt in order to attend the games<\/a>. \u201cWe are a poor country, we are a failed country, but we are the best fans,\u201d an Argentine sociologist said.<\/p>\n

Kids ask, astronauts answer<\/p>\n

Last month, NASA sent four astronauts around the moon, farther from Earth than any human in history. Recently, they came to The New York Times offices to answer questions from some of our most discerning readers: children.<\/p>\n

One youngster asked if the astronauts had pizza parties while in space (not quite, but the kale salad was pretty good, they said). Another child asked if there was gravity in the crew\u2019s dreams (the astronauts said they all imagined themselves floating during their space slumber). The entire question and answer session is worth watching<\/a>.<\/p>\n
