{"id":224578,"date":"2026-05-08T14:33:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T14:33:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/224578\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T14:33:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T14:33:11","slug":"canvas-hack-impacting-new-york-new-jersey-schools-universities-amid-finals-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/224578\/","title":{"rendered":"Canvas hack impacting New York, New Jersey schools, universities amid finals season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cyberattack-shutters-canvas-learning-platform-for-schools-across-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cyberattack<\/a>\u00a0on a system used across the country is affecting thousands of students in the Tri-State Area amid finals season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A company called Infrastructure was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/cyberattack-shuts-down-canvas-learning-platform-for-schools-across-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hacked<\/a> by a group called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ticketmaster-breach-shinyhunters-560-million-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ShinyHunters<\/a> Thursday. Infrastructure is behind the learning management system called Canvas, which thousands of students and teachers rely on.<\/p>\n<p>New York City Schools Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/five-new-public-schools-nyc-bronx-queens\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kamar Samuels<\/a> released a statement Friday about two privacy issues school officials learned about. One is impacting up to seven schools, and one is local to one campus, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;New York City Public Schools places a premium on the protection of student data and use of technology, and devotes significant resources to doing so. In line with that, we act quickly and urgently when we learn of a potential breach,&#8221; Samuels said. &#8220;In such cases, we work around the clock with any vendor that may be involved, as well as all appropriate law enforcement agencies and NYC Cyber Command to drive towards resolution and safeguards as soon as feasible.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What schools are affected by the Canvas hack?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/bodycam-video-nypd-columbia-university-student-ice\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Columbia University<\/a> officials posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Columbia\/status\/2052494398324174927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">social media<\/a> that they are investigating after widespread issues were reported. The Mailman School of Public Health at the university postponed all exams and assignments due Friday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/rutgers-university-rami-elghandour-graduation-speaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rutgers University<\/a> also released several updates throughout Thursday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are actively monitoring the global system outage impacting Canvas.
