Queens Of The Stone Age<\/a> brought their UK and European \u2018Catacombs\u2019 tour to an end with a breathtaking show at London\u2019s Royal Albert Hall last night (Wednesday October 29) \u2013 airing new material and performing with Matt Berry<\/a> during a stripped-back and emotional set. In keeping with the spirit of their recent live concert film, documentary and live album \u2018Alive In The Catacombs<\/a>\u2018, Josh Homme<\/a> and co delivered a much more stripped-back affair than their usual hard rock bluster.<\/p>\n

Split into three sets, the first part saw the band recreate the sonics and intimate aesthetic of their Paris Catacombs performance, as the show rolled on by inviting a string section to the stage and gradually blossoming into a more full-band affair that drew on the band\u2019s more soulful, sideways and esoteric material.<\/p>\n

Miles Kane<\/a>, Graham Norton and Bad Seeds<\/a> icon Warren Ellis<\/a> were in the audience, as well Homme\u2019s parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat an honour and a privilege and a joy it is to see you,\u201d said Homme, addressing the sold out auditorium.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I bought the music business with my dad\u2019s money, I knew it was gonna be a tough time,\u201d joked the frontman about his humble desert beginnings, before paying tribute to his parents in the crowd. \u201cDon\u2019t point them out, they might have a heart attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homme continued: \u201cThey done good because life is a chaotic, difficult holy shit of \u2018What the fuck just happened?\u2019\u00a0You don\u2019t have go be afraid when you\u2019re alone because honestly it\u2019s too fucking late, and there\u2019s a comfort in that.\u201d<\/p>\n

As well as Homme weilding a meat cleaver and regularly strolling through the crowd and stalls in full lounge lizard mode, highlights of the set included an orchestral reimagining of \u2018Songs For The Deaf\u2019 deep-cut \u2018Mosquito Song\u2019, an out of Them Crooked Vultures<\/a>\u2018 \u2018Spinning in Daffodils\u2019, the full and epic Bond theme treatment being given to \u2018The Vampyre of Time and Memory\u2019, bassist Michael Shuman taking over lead vocal duties for a dynamic performance of \u2018Auto Pilot\u2019 and the airing of new song \u2018Easy Street\u2019.<\/p>\n

The latter saw the audience invited to clap along to the flamenco rhythms of the track, showcasing a more laidback and luxurious direction for the band, complete with some David Bowie<\/a> \u2018Heroes\u2019-esque guitar work.<\/p>\n

Completing a unique, once-in-a lifetime set of the band\u2019s more intricate and colourful work, Homme and Shuman exchanged lead vocals on an a capella performance of \u2018Long Slow Goodbye\u2019 backed by the iconic Royal Albert Hall organ \u2013 revealed after as being played by comedian, actor and musician Matt Berry of The IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi\u2019s Darkplace fame.<\/p>\n

Homme then bid farewell by dedicating the show to the memory of late friend, bandmate and collaborator Mark Lanegan<\/a>.<\/p>\n
