Someone said, “I feel like I’m at a rave.” But it was the rally for Mayor Mamdani’s first 100 days, packed with teachers, taxi drivers, and city employees — many of them young voters who helped usher in the youngest mayor in more than a century.

The energy was the point: 62% of 18- to 29-year-olds voted for him, and his engagement strategy reflects that debt — turning political moments into something closer to a party, where culture replaces the civic tedium.

City politics has long been experienced by young New Yorkers as something distant, decided elsewhere, by other people. Mamdani disrupted that, and disrupting a feeling is not nothing. It’s also not policy. The question is whether the energy Mamdani has summoned will survive with the slower, harder work of governing.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="DJ Oscar Nunes performs during a rally marking the first 100 days in office for Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens, on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Lynn pointed to his lunch with Queens rapper Action Bronson as evidence of a mayor who understands that cultural credibility reaches people that press releases don’t.

But both are already inside the system. The harder test is what Mamdani’s engagement looks like for young people with more reasons to stay disengaged than show up.

At 19, Janiya Byfield walked into her Bronx polling site on Election Day — her first time voting. She chose Mamdani because he aligned with her priorities: safer streets, more shelter, and ending the school-to-prison pipeline. What she noticed at the polls was telling: plenty of older voters, and nobody her age. Young people, she said, were out there, but mostly on social media, not the voting booth.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="People attend a rally marking the first 100 days in office for Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens, on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Mamdani resonates because he makes young voters feel that change is possible. But she knows that it’s harder to reach those whose parents don’t believe in the political system, or who are afraid to vote because they are undocumented, or can’t distinguish one Democrat from another.

The toughest terrain for Mamdani was Staten Island — the only borough he didn’t carry. Christian Howles, 30, the parliamentarian for the Staten Island Young Democrats, framed the borough’s resistance as “a politics of grievance” that long predates Mamdani.

Samuel Rozenfeld, 24, grew up in Staten Island’s Republican-leaning neighborhoods and canvassed for Mamdani. He offered the evening’s most cautionary note: “A lesson from the Obama campaign is you have such strong grassroots energy — people on the ground, ready to canvas, ready to door knock — and where does it go?”

It’s the right question, and it doesn’t have a comfortable answer yet. Elizabeth Rigby, a public policy professor, was direct: there is a long history of engagement efforts being more symbolic than substantive, offering young people the feeling of a seat at the table without the actual influence that comes with it.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" alt="Christian Howles, the parliamentarian for the Staten Island Young Democrats, attends the 100-Day Mamdani event on April 12 2026. The energy that carried him into office is now the thing he most needs to sustain, and sustaining it will require delivering something more durable than a good party.

Hug and Maniaci are students in the opinion writing seminar at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
