In the late 19th century, this stretch earned the nickname \u201cthe Irish Fifth Avenue\u201d for the well-off second- and third-generation Irish immigrants who made their homes here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Alexander Avenue was also known as \u201cPoliticians\u2019 Row\u201d and \u201cDoctors\u2019 Row,\u201d which can give you an idea of the elite professionals who occupied the parlors and bed chambers of these fine houses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/273alexanderavenuetowercorner.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" wp-block-paragraph\">The houses are a far cry from the rural Mott Haven of the early 19th century, when the Bronx was part of Westchester County. <a href=\"https:\/\/6tocelebrate.org\/site\/j-l-mott-iron-works-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In 1828<\/a>, the landowning Morris family sold a vast tract of countryside to ironworks pioneer Jordan Mott, who invented the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/history-of-the-oven-from-cast-iron-to-electric-1992212\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cpractical\u201d coal oven<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMott was the first major industrialist to locate in The Bronx,\u201d states the 1966 <a href=\"https:\/\/s-media.nyc.gov\/agencies\/lpc\/lp\/0451.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) report <\/a>on Mott Haven. \u201cAlthough the Morris family sold Mott the land for his foundry, his industrialism was resented as a crass intrusion into the quiet, rural countryside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/jordanmottironworks.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"54140\" wp-block-paragraph\">That didn\u2019t stop Mott, who renamed the area after himself and reshaped the riverfront by building canals where ships could deliver raw materials to his foundry. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">He also took advantage of his proximity to the new New York and Harlem Railroad line, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/6tocelebrate.org\/site\/j-l-mott-iron-works-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Historic Districts Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">With business growing, his foundry (at left) attracted workers\u2014particularly unskilled immigrant laborers, many of the them Irish, who came to live in newly christened Mott Haven. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The first of the row houses, numbers 276-274 between 139th and 140th Streets, went up during the Civil War (second photo).
