May Day marks the birthday of Queen Victoria and occurs on the third Monday of May.

The annual May Day festivities in Fort Langley are on May 18.

“It’s a service to the community,” said Wendy Canessa, organizer with the Fort Langley Lions. “We’re in our 104th iteration of it. And people expect it and look forward to it.”

The free event brings together local musical talent, the public and vendors for a day of community. The event typically attracts 3,000 to 5,000 people.

Organizers encourage people to take a few steps to make the day more comfortable, including bringing lawn chairs, blankets, and umbrellas (whether it’s rain or shine) for both the parade and the Family Fun Festival in the park.

The day starts with a good breakfast, cooked up by the Fort Langley Lions. It’s $8 cash and available at the Lion Hall, Glover Road and 88 Avenue, between 8 and 10:30 a.m.

Fueled up, people can then make their way to a prime viewing spot along the parade route. The parade, which feature a variety of groups including the volunteers of the B.C. Farm Museum on vintage tractors, tour several Fort Langley Streets. The route starts on Mary Avenue (not Mavis as in the past) and finishes at Fort Langley Park.

Anyone involved in the parade is asked to check in with organizers near the Lions Hall between 8 and 10:30 a.m. so they are in position for the parade. They are then put in order on side streets. Canessa said people can still sign up for the parade.

“We will take people right up until the last minute,” she said.

There will be road closures between 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to allow for the parade and other festivities.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. and this year features about 50 entries so far, including more horses than in the past.

After the parade, people can make their way to Fort Langley Park on Nash Street for an afternoon of activities. The festival includes live entertainment; kids activities; barbecue chicken, hotdogs and fries; food trucks, and vendors. Unique to Langley is the pageant that was recently held for the May Queen & Her Royal Party. They will be present that day.

And people can see a heritage activity that takes place in few communities anymore – May Pole Dancing done by local elementary school children. May poles are a European tradition dating back centuries with the dancing done to celebrate spring, growth and the arrival of summer.

Anyone interested in lending a hand can contact Canessa through the website maydayfortlangley.com where the public can also find details of the annual celebration.

”It’s an all-volunteer event, so many hands make light work,” she noted. “If you’d like to volunteer, give me a shout.”

Another option on Monday is to visit the Fort Langley National Historic Site which has a full day of hands-on activities and discoveries. This year’s programming highlights the men, women, and children whose labour kept the fort running.

• Child Labour: An immersive experience will teach about a working day in the life of a young people at the fort.

• Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper: Meet the cooper and learn how barrels were made. Barrel making was an essential trade during the fur trade era.

• Legacy of our stewards: Learn about the lives and work of Hudson’s Bay Company employees whose efforts supported daily life at the fort.

• Children’s scavenger hunt: Young explorers can follow clues throughout the site and earn a small prize.

• Blacksmithing demonstrations: Stop by the forge to see sparks fly and tools take shape as blacksmith brings 19th-century craftsmanship to life.

Regular admission rates apply and youth up to age 17 are admitted free. The historic site is also allowing public parking in its paid lot and at the orchard. Canessa said there is also parking at the Lions Hall and at the church on 208 Street, but parking is always tight during big events in Fort Langley. People are encouraged to carpool and consider transit.

Langley parties for Queen’s birthday Published 6:00 pm Monday, May 11, 2026 The public can take part in…

[37
9,24,63,122,124,123
post-228058","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-queens","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-queens","tag-queens-headlines","tag-queens-news
["GET
