\n\tEarly on Monday evening, Iris van Herpen <\/a>could already feel the vibration in the room. The designer was standing in the glass lobby of the Brooklyn Museum<\/a>, light streaming in, as her exhibition \u201cIris van Herpen<\/a>: Sculpting the Senses\u201d welcomed its first visitors during the Brooklyn Artists Ball.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been such a joy, because I\u2019ve been working on the exhibition for such a long time,\u201d said the designer of getting to experience the final installation. \u201cIt was just finished yesterday, and that was when all the light was done, and the sound was on \u2014 and then it just suddenly feels it\u2019s all one whole,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s really a dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the exhibition opens to the public later this week, the museum offered an early preview during its annual gala fundraiser, which honored the Dutch fashion designer.<\/p>\n

\n\tVan Herpen has been tweaking her retrospective exhibition<\/a> as it travels to various museums. For New York, she focused on enlarging the \u201catelier\u201d section, which includes a new installation specifically for the museum.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere are some dynamic elements that really make the exhibition come alive, specifically in New York. I haven\u2019t done that before,\u201d added van Herpen, who will return to the museum later this week to create a new look live onsite. \u201c\u200aI\u2019m changing it all the time, because I want it to evolve with me as I\u2019m changing, and I want the exhibition to be exactly where I am at this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd on Monday night, that moment was reflected in her outfit choice.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis look is about vibration and movement,\u201d said the designer, describing her look for the evening. \u201cAnd it just felt right. I chose it on intuition.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGala guests included costume designer Paul Tazewell, Chlo\u00eb Sevigny, Karen Gillan, Hari Nef, Peggy Gou, Mickalene Thomas, Kaws, Dustin Yellin, Wes Gordon and Paul Arnhold, and LaQuan Smith. During cocktail hour, the crowd was invited to preview the expansive exhibition on the fifth floor before heading down to the museum\u2019s Beaux-Arts Court for dinner.<\/p>\n

\n\tCoco Rocha<\/a> arrived at the gala straight from teaching her Coco Rocha<\/a> Model Camp masterclass. \u201c\u200aI left there and they\u2019re all like, \u2018You look like an alien \u2014 and a fabulous one at that,\u2019\u201d said Rocha, dressed in an Iris van Herpen<\/a> dress composed of molded black PVC strips, from the fall 2012 \u201cHybrid Holism\u201d collection.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u200aWhen we talk about \u2018what\u2019s the future of fashion?,\u2019 we always say \u2018Iris van Herpen \u2014 that\u2019s what it should look like,\u2019\u201d said Rocha of the designer. \u201c\u200aIt\u2019s surrealism. It\u2019s beautiful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tRocha added that one of her favorite working memories is the designer\u2019s fall 2024 couture show, where she and several other models were installed within wall canvases alongside large-scale artworks. \u201c\u200aWe were up there for an hour, and we were like moving art \u2014 and it was so clever, because it truly is art,\u201d she added. \u201cI want to do more of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Brooklyn Museum<\/a> exhibition also places van Herpen\u2019s work in dialogue with visual fine artists, and features a soundscape created by her longtime partner, Salvador Breed.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u200aI\u2019m always interested in the experience to be three-dimensional, and to be something where \u2014 immersive\u2019s an overused word \u2014 you feel an ambiance and a mood when you walk into the space,\u201d said curator Matthew Yokobosky, who worked alongside the designer for a year bringing the exhibition to life at the museum.<\/p>\n

\n\tDinner kicked off with a performance by two New York City Ballet dancers, wearing costumes that van Herpen designed for last fall\u2019s NYCB Fall Fashion Gala<\/a>. Later, Jordan Roth introduced van Herpen, the evening\u2019s honoree, to the stage.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhoever decided irises on the table \u2014 yes. Very good,\u201d he said, remarking on the table decor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u200aI\u2018ve had the rare privilege of stepping inside her creations,\u201d said Roth. \u201cYou don\u2019t just wear them. You transcend them. They ask something of your body. They change how you move, how you hold yourself, how you exist in space,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt feels less like getting dressed, and more like entering a new universe.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Early on Monday evening, Iris van Herpen could already feel the vibration in the room.
