WASHINGTON \u2014\u00a0Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary resigned Tuesday after irking President Trump by slow-walking\u00a0flavored e-cigarette approvals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump confirmed that Makary, a former Johns Hopkins cancer surgeon, stepped down as the president left the White House en route to China for a summit with Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a great doctor [but] he was having some difficulty,\u201d Trump explained, adding that he thought Makary was \u201cgoing to go on and live a good life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump later posted Markary\u2019s\u00a0resignation note<\/a>, which was bizarrely addressed to \u201cDr. President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease accept my resignation, effective today,\u201d Makary wrote in what appeared to be a\u00a0text message.<\/p>\n

Makary regularly appeared with Trump over the past year at events promoting public health initiatives and the president\u2019s efforts to\u00a0drive down prescription drug prices<\/a>, but he also made powerful enemies.<\/p>\n

In addition to well-connected executives in the vape industry, whom Trump promised to support during his successful 2024 presidential campaign, Makary angered advocates for the rapid approval of treatments for rare ailments\u00a0like Huntington\u2019s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He also\u00a0earned foes among anti-abortion advocates who wanted him to stop the mailing of mifepristone, part of a two-drug cocktail used to terminate pregnancies.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Makary was uniquely destructive to the prolife movement,\u201d Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.)\u00a0said on X Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Administration officials, meanwhile,\u00a0told The Post<\/a>\u00a0they were infuriated by Makary meeting with, providing funding to and hiring subordinates associated with what they viewed as left-leaning causes.<\/p>\n

The vape battle reportedly prompted Trump to directly reprimand Makary last week \u2014 viewing him as frustrating a headline-grabbing campaign promise.<\/p>\n

A pivotal matter involved Makary standing in the way of market approval for a California manufacturer\u2019s \u201cage-gated\u201d e-cigarrette that requires users to scan an ID to unlock the nicotine-laced vapor.<\/p>\n

Opponents say they could reverse progress in combating youth addiction to nicotine, while supporters say they are likely a safer alternative for adults who use combustible cigarettes known to cause cancer and heart disease.<\/p>\n
