Ng\u0101 wai hono i te p\u014d, the M\u0101ori queen, is visiting London this week. \u201cWhether at home or on the world stage, Te Arikinui\u2019s leadership is about creating pathways for our people, particularly our rangathi [M\u0101ori youth] to thrive,\u201d Kiingitanga (the M\u0101ori monarchy) spokesperson Rahui Papa said in a statement. (Te Arikinui is the queen\u2019s title, meaning Paramount Chief.)<\/p>\n

After attending the King\u2019s Trust celebration last night, she met with Prince William this morning at Windsor Castle. According to Kiingitanga, they discussed \u201ca range of global topics\u201d and she \u201caffirmed her belief in the power of Indigenous knowledge and intergenerational stewardship to help solve the world\u2019s environmental and social challenges.\u201d The M\u0101ori monarchy noted<\/a> it was \u201ca meaningful k\u014drero [conversation]\u201d focused on \u201ca shared passion for environmental solutions that bring together indigenous knowledge and Western science.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year marks the 50th Anniversary of The Trust, which is dedicated to helping young people to complete their journey from education to employment,\u201d Kiingitanga said in a statement. \u201cFour rangatahi entrepreneurs from Aotearoa will take part in the anniversary celebrations at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday and a garden party at Buckingham Palace on Thursday. The rangatahi have established businesses that are creating jobs and opportunities for wh\u0101nau [extended M\u0101ori family] and their local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ng\u0101 Wai Hono i te P\u014d<\/a> is just the eighth M\u0101ori monarch in New Zealand\u2014and second-ever queen. She is the only daughter and youngest child of the former M\u0101ori king T\u016bheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII.<\/p>\n

Ng\u0101 Wai Hono i te P\u014d met King Charles once, during a visit to London in June 2022, to strengthen ties between the two royal families. \u201cThrough these connections and making peace with the circumstances of the past, we will be able to find a way forward collectively,\u201d she said<\/a> at the time. \u201cI\u2019ll be honest, my greatest desire of all is for all M\u0101ori land to be returned to M\u0101ori.\u201d<\/p>\n
