{"id":229182,"date":"2026-05-12T22:30:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T22:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/229182\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T22:30:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T22:30:12","slug":"queens-university-campus-mourning-after-swimmer-dies-in-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/229182\/","title":{"rendered":"Queens University campus mourning after swimmer dies in crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 22-year-old Queens University swimmer died in car crash on early Sunday morning near campus, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForever a royal,\u201d said the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1B8Q5eSd8E\/\">university\u2019s swim team on social media<\/a>. \u201cWe honor the life of Keegan McKenney \u2014 a cherished teammate, friend, and member of the Queens family whose impact will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McKenney was in the passenger seat when the crash occurred at 2:15 a.m. in the 1400 block of Queens Road West, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charlottenc.gov\/cmpd\/News-Information\/Newsroom\/Fatal-Crash-Investigation-in-the-Providence-Division-05.10.26\">CMPD said in a news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle, a BMW M3, went off the road and crashed into a tree, CMPD said. A police incident report said there was also a 22-year-old woman and another man inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>CMPD said all three were wearing seatbelts. Investigators are still determining if speed or impairment factored into the crash, the department said. Alcohol may be a factor, according to the police report.<\/p>\n<p>McKenney\u2019s hometown was Cape Elizabeth, Maine, according to the school\u2019s website.
