Kathy Hochul to accept a deal that could lower the retirement age of the state\u2019s public educators to 58 years old. Stephen Yang for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>A coalition of unions pitched lowering the retirement ages of Tier VI public workers hired after 2012, specifically carving out teachers with 58-year-old retirement age, insiders said. All other Tier VI employees, including public health care workers and cops, would have their retirement lowered to 60 years old.<\/p>\n<p>The current retirement age is 63.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul on Monday defended proposals to lower retirement ages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re having a real shortage here, so I have to address that number one,\u201d she claimed to The Post, regurgitating the unions\u2019 line of a alleged recruitment and retention \u201ccrisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/11\/us-news\/nyc-ny-politics-live-updates-on-zohran-mamdani-governors-race-more-may-11-12-13-14-15\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Follow live updates on Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s socialist agenda and the latest in NYC politics<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumber two, as you know, there was a very, very expensive, ambitious plan put forth and this has been scaled back dramatically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sources cautioned Wednesday that the deal \u2013 which began as $1.5 billion ask from the unions that would\u2019ve reduced all public workers\u2019 retirement ages to 55 after 30 years years of service \u2013 was still not yet fully baked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe details literally are being still worked out and we\u2019ll make sure you get them when they\u2019re done,\u201d Hochul said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Two plus two equals five\u2026 years off teachers\u2019 retirements.
