The New York Mets simply cannot catch a break in the 2026 MLB season. In a season that has already spiraled into disaster, the Mets were dealt another crushing blow Wednesday when catcher Francisco Alvarez was placed on the 10-day injured list with a torn meniscus in his right knee. And unfortunately for New York, this is almost certainly not a short-term absence.

Alvarez Likely Facing Extended Absence

Alvarez exited Tuesday’s game due to knee discomfort before undergoing an MRI that revealed a meniscus tear. While the Mets did not provide an official recovery timeline, injuries of this nature almost always require surgery, meaning Alvarez is expected to miss significantly more than the minimum 10 days.

The severity of the tear will ultimately determine how long he’s sidelined. For a Mets team already running out of healthy contributors, this is devastating news.

Alvarez was expected to be one of the foundational pieces of the Mets lineup this season.

Instead, he now joins an increasingly overcrowded injured list that already includes:

At this point, it’s becoming difficult to even recognize the roster the Mets envisioned entering the season.

The Season Is Spiraling

The Mets currently sit at 16-25, one of the worst records in baseball. And honestly, things somehow continue getting worse by the week. The offense has looked completely lifeless for long stretches, largely because so many expected contributors have either:

Underperformed or ended up injured

Now Alvarez joins that list as another major loss.

""

In response to Alvarez’s injury, the Mets recalled Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse. He is expected to split catching duties with Luis Torrens moving forward. But realistically, replacing Alvarez’s upside and presence behind the plate is going to be difficult.

At this point, the injuries are no longer isolated bad luck. The Mets have become one of the biggest disappointments in baseball despite:

Big offseason expectations

Veteran talent throughout the roster

And with the losses continuing to pile up, frustration around the organization is only growing louder. The Mets entered 2026 expecting to compete. Instead, nearly everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. And now, with Francisco Alvarez likely facing a lengthy absence, New York’s season has somehow managed to get even worse.
