{"id":231077,"date":"2026-05-14T07:02:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T07:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/231077\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T07:02:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T07:02:14","slug":"news-12-bronx-george-washington-bridge-lower-level-closed-indefinitely-after-debris-falls-on-cross-bronx-expressway-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/231077\/","title":{"rendered":"News 12 | Bronx | George Washington Bridge Lower Level Closed Indefinitely After Debris Falls On Cross Bronx Expressway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">It was a messy morning commute for drivers heading into New Jersey after debris fell from the ceiling onto a westbound lane of the Cross Bronx Expressway near the George Washington Bridge.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">It happened just after 8 a.m., leading to the shutdown of all westbound lanes toward the lower level of the bridge while crews worked to investigate and make repairs.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">The closure created significant delays for drivers, many of whom said they were stuck in traffic for hours trying to make their way into New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cI was stuck in traffic on the George Washington Bridge for almost two and a half hours,\u201d one commuter said.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Another driver described heavy congestion from the start of the Cross Bronx, with conditions worsening near the bridge.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">RELATED: <a data-rich-text-hyperlink=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/hudsonvalley.news12.com\/2026\/05\/10\/car-damaged-by-falling-debris-on-cross-bronx-expressway\/QqBdLj9jhvVzQJ39Vh2nF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Car damaged by falling debris on Cross Bronx Expressway<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">\u201cIt was bumper to bumper the whole way\u2026 then the lower level was completely closed,\u201d another commuter said.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Drivers heading to the 181st Street exit were detoured to the Jerome Avenue and Major Deegan Expressway exits.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">One person was rushed to the hospital.
