We don’t have any updates to share right now.”

That’s not a denial. That’s a team in the middle of a negotiation.

Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds for NYC Fans

Gotham has spent years being a New York team that technically plays in New Jersey – first at Rutgers in Central Jersey, then at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison since 2021.

The Harrison move was an upgrade, but it still requires PATH or NJ Transit or a cross-Hudson drive, and that friction has been a consistent complaint since the Sky Blue FC days.

Queens changes everything. The Willets Point node is one of the most transit-accessible sports venues in the entire region.

The 7 train runs directly there. The LIRR covers Long Island.

You’re talking about a stadium that a fan from Astoria, the Bronx, or Midtown can reach without a second thought – and one that a fan from Nassau County can get to without sitting on the Cross Island Parkway for 90 minutes.

For context: Gotham averaged around 8,900 fans per game in Harrison in 2025, middle of the pack in the NWSL.

A venue that eliminates the transit barrier, in a borough that already bleeds soccer culture, has a real shot at blowing that number up.

The team’s July 15 match at Citi Field against the Washington Spirit is essentially a proof-of-concept game – watch the attendance and the atmosphere carefully.

The franchise has been pulling hard toward New York identity for a while now.

It dropped the “NJ/NY” from its branding, held its 2025 championship parade at City Hall, and just unveiled a ‘Lady Liberty’ third kit in blue, white and orange.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani showed up to Saturday’s match against Boston Legacy, and the city partnered with the club to offer $5 tickets to 1,000 fans – an allotment that sold out in hours.

The political will is clearly there. The venue piece is what’s been missing.

The Business Case Behind the Move

The NWSL’s average franchise valuation hit roughly $66 million in 2024, and the clubs driving that growth are the ones locking down legitimate home venues.

Bay FC, San Diego Wave, the Chicago Red Stars – the league’s upward trajectory runs through teams that aren’t stadium nomads.

Etihad Park is privately financed by City Football Group and partners, with the land under a long-term city ground lease.

That structure gives CFG meaningful scheduling control – and the incentive to maximize year-round utilization.

A NWSL tenant fills dates NYCFC doesn’t, generates additional revenue streams, and strengthens the political argument that the Willets Point redevelopment delivers community value.

The broader Willets Point Phase 2 plan projects more than 14,000 construction jobs and 1,550 permanent positions – city officials want this thing humming.

The Complications Worth Watching

Nothing is finalized, and a few real friction points exist. Etihad Park doesn’t open until mid-2027, and Gotham will need a clear plan for 2027 before any 2028 commitment makes sense.

There’s also the question of scheduling conflicts – two teams sharing a soccer-specific venue means tight coordination, especially if either club makes a deep playoff run.

Harrison’s New Jersey fan base is real. The Sky Blue–to–Gotham transition already asked those supporters to re-commit once.

A full move across the Hudson is a harder ask, even if Queens is genuinely more accessible for the majority of the metro market.

The optics of the “NJ” disappearing entirely from the brand will land differently in Union County than in Flushing.

And while the transit story at Willets Point is strong, fan access and public transit capacity around major soccer events in the New York region have shown real strain – something stadium planners will need to account for on high-demand NWSL nights.

What’s Next for Gotham FC and Etihad Park

The immediate test cases are right in front of us. Gotham plays at Citi Field on July 15 and at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island on July 18 – two one-off NYC dates that function as auditions for what a permanent city home could look like.

Turnout, vibe, and fan travel patterns from those matches will tell both sides plenty.

After that, watch for any formal lease or partnership announcement between Gotham, NYCFC, and City Football Group as Etihad Park construction milestones approach.

The 2027 stadium opening is the real deadline – everything has to be settled well before then.

Gotham is a back-to-back champion playing in New Jersey. Queens would make them a New York institution. That’s not a small distinction.

New York City’s soccer infrastructure is finally starting to match its ambitions.
