An Iraqi national with suspected ties\u00a0to terror groups and the Iranian military has been arrested and hauled to New York to face charges\u00a0of carrying out 20 terror attacks against US and Israeli interests in Europe and Canada\u00a0\u2014 and plotting the bombing of a New York synagogue.<\/p>\n
Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi,\u00a0an alleged \u201ccommander\u201d in terrorist organization linked to Iran\u2019s\u00a0Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,\u00a0orchestrated the attacks \u2014 including the firebombing of the Bank of New York Mellon building in Amsterdam and\u00a0stabbing of two Jewish victims in London\u00a0\u2014 as retaliation for the US and Israel\u2019s ongoing war in Iran, a newly unsealed criminal complaint alleges.<\/p>\n
Al-Saadi was also behind a March\u00a09, 2026, bombing of a\u00a0synagogue in Li\u00e8ge, Belgium, a March 13, 2026, arson of a temple in Rotterdam, and paid an undercover law enforcement officer $3,000 to bomb a \u201cprominent\u201d Big Apple temple in April, court papers allege.<\/p>\n

The specific New York City synagogue was kept under wraps by prosecutors Friday.\u00a0 Al-Saadi also allegedly tried to attack targets in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, Ariz.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The suspect, who was allegedly the high-ranking official in\u00a0Kata\u2019ib Hizballah,\u00a0\u201chas directed and urged others to attack U.S. and Israeli interests, including by killing Americans and Jews, in retaliation for the Iranian Military Conflict,\u201d the criminal complaint says.<\/p>\n
Wearing a gray t-shirt, Al-Saadi griped during his\u00a0first appearance in Manhattan federal court Friday afternoon\u00a0\u00a0\u2014\u00a0where he\u00a0faced charges of conspiring to provide material support to terrorist groups, conspiracy to bomb a place of public use, and other raps\u2014 that he is a \u201cprisoner of war.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very important to Mr. Al-Saadi that the court know that he is a political prisoner and a prisoner of war and should be treated as such,\u201d his public defender, Andrew Dalack, told the court.<\/p>\n
Al-Saadi, who was arrested in Turkey earlier this week before being hauled to the US, is being kept in solitary confinement at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, Dalack said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAl-Saadi attempted to disrupt American society through intimidation and violence.\u00a0 In a righteous and just contrast, his prosecution will highlight the best of our country,\u201d Manhattan US Attorney Jay Clayton said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose who engage in or support terrorism against Americans and on U.S. soil should take note:\u00a0 the whole of the federal government is committed to dismantling terrorist organizations and bringing their members to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Al-Saadi was held without bail Friday afternoon, with his next court date set for May 29.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis case puts into stark relief the global threats posed by the Iranian regime and its proxies like Kata\u2019ib Hizballah\u2014Foreign Terrorist Organizations that have repeatedly targeted Jewish communities across Europe and the United States since the war began,\u201d NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The suspected terrorist, who also had alleged ties to Hezbollah, posed for photos with well-known Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani, who was killed by a US drone strike in 2020, according to court papers.<\/p>\n
