{"id":235893,"date":"2026-05-18T21:27:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T21:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/235893\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T21:27:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T21:27:07","slug":"news-12-bronx-cross-bronx-expressway-bridge-project-suspended-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/235893\/","title":{"rendered":"News 12 | Bronx | Cross Bronx Expressway Bridge Project Suspended"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">New York State Department of Transportation City Regional Director Erik Koester says the <a data-rich-text-hyperlink=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/bronx.news12.com\/deadline-delayed-again-for-cross-bronx-expressway-bridge-project-amid-community-pushback\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cross Bronx Expressway Five Bridges Project<\/a> has been suspended.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">The &#8220;Five Bridges Project,&#8221; a proposed $900 million initiative, has faced numerous obstacles and a good deal of pushback for over two years.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Officials say the five elevated bridges along the expressway are over 70 years old and in need of upgrades, which the project would provide.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Critics of the project, including local elected officials and organizations, argue the project would worsen air quality in an area that already deals with pollution and high asthma rates.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Koester says the NYSDOT has been listening to feedback from the community and &#8220;significantly scaled back the project last year, eliminating elements that the community did not agree with while adding new elements at their request.&#8221; He says they did not come to an agreement on how to advance the project<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">The NYSDOT will not release a final environmental assessment of the project, and it will be suspended, Koester says.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">NYSDOT will continue to monitor the conditions of the bridges and make repairs when necessary.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">News 12 has reached out to local activists for comment and is waiting to hear back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York State Department of Transportation City Regional Director Erik Koester says the Cross Bronx Expressway Five Bridges&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":235894,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[38],"tags":[128,9,24,63,129,131,130],"class_list":["post-235893","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-the-bronx","tag-bronx","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-the-bronx","tag-the-bronx-headlines","tag-the-bronx-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/235893","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=235893"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/235893\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/235894"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=235893"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=235893"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=235893"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
