But the nine-member jury found that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/05\/18\/technology\/openai-trial-verdict-altman-musk\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Musk had failed to file his lawsuit within a time frame required by law<\/a>, and the judge accepted the decision. Musk\u2019s lawyer said he would appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The case was closely watched because it had the potential to upend the A.I. landscape. But for now, Altman is free to solidify his control atop one of the industry\u2019s most talked-about companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cOpenAI gets to celebrate and breathe a sigh of relief after this verdict,\u201d our tech reporter Mike Isaac told me. \u201cBut they shouldn\u2019t rest too easy. They still have to worry about building their business for an initial public offering later this year, and fend off strong competitors like Anthropic and Google, both of which are nipping at Altman\u2019s heels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justice Dept.\u2019s $1.8 billion fund could compensate Trump allies<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The Trump administration announced today that it had created a new $1.8 billion fund to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/18\/us\/politics\/trump-irs-lawsuit.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">compensate people who say they were unfairly targeted<\/a> by the Biden Justice Department and Democrats. The move could funnel taxpayer money to President Trump\u2019s political allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/18\/us\/politics\/trump-anti-weaponization-fund.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The unusual fund<\/a> was created in exchange for the president dropping his $10 billion lawsuit against the I.R.S.
