Ginger\u2019s in Brooklyn is the sort of in-the-know watering hole that has been featured on The Cut and Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveler. No guide to queer nightlife in New York City is complete without a mention of the Park Slope hotspot. It has historical significance as well: Opened in 2000, it is now Brooklyn\u2019s oldest lesbian bar, only closing for 19 months<\/a> during the COVID-19 pandemic, but otherwise staying in continuous operation.<\/p>\n

The mere existence of cultural landmarks like these is why many people move to New York in the first place \u2014\u00a0and then, apparently, complain about them.<\/p>\n

In an Instagram post<\/a> on Tuesday, Ginger\u2019s announced that it will have to \u201ccancel the majority of our DJ events during Pride this year\u201d because of \u201congoing noise complaints in the neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as we love turning up the music and creating space for queer joy, we also want to remain respectful of the neighborhood we have called home for the past 20 years, and our space that has been a neighborhood bar for over 100 years,\u201d the team wrote.<\/p>\n

The decision led to immediate outrage from those in New York\u2019s queer nightlife and art scenes. \u201cPeople will really move into an apartment above a bar and then be mad they moved into an apartment above a bar,\u201d wrote DJ Stargrl.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo lie why doesn\u2019t the community collectively meet up every week and scream in neighborhoods being affected by gentrification because at this point\u2026\u201d wrote art director Roxanne Castro.<\/p>\n

Comedian Bridget Foley wrote, \u201cTell whoever is making the complaints to come outside,\u201d adding, \u201cwe won\u2019t jump them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brooklyn\u2019s Park Slope neighborhood was gentrified in the late 20th century but is undergoing a process in the 21st that scholars call \u201csuper-gentrification,\u201d described by SUNY New Paltz sociologist Judith Halasz<\/a> as \u201cthe further upscaling of already gentrified neighborhoods with the in-migration of upper-income residents and displacement of middle class residents, many of whom were among the initial gentrifiers.\u201d This shift, Halasz notes, is concomitant with the rise of \u201cglobal finance capital.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as many commenters on the Ginger\u2019s post pointed out, there is a painful irony to people who have decided to move to \u2014 or keep apartments in \u2014 New York because it is a cultural epicenter deciding to call the 311 noise hotline over one of the last lesbian bars left in the country.<\/p>\n

As Brooklyn-based actor Kathel Griffin put it in the comments: \u201cCan\u2019t they just go to the hamptons for the summer anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n
