Emirates could soon fly<\/a> between the U.S. and Israel, as well as between Israel and Bangkok.\n<\/p>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently visited the UAE<\/a>. Israel sent an Iron Dome system and troops to the UAE<\/a> to protect that country from attacks by Iran. And they\u2019ve had relations since the Abraham Accords in 2020. <\/p>\n

Emirates could fly Dubai \u2013 Tel Aviv \u2013 New York under the existing U.S. \u2013 U.A.E. Open Skies Treaty.
\nIsrael is reportedly offering them \u2018seventh freedom\u2019 flights from Tel Aviv to New York without a continuation to and from Dubai. This would require U.S. approval, as it\u2019s not provided for in the existing treaty.
\nFlyDubai is also being offered subsidies to operate from Eilat, Israel \u2013 presumably similar to what was supposed to be available to Wizz Air to operate.<\/p>\n

Fifth freedom flights like Dubai \u2013 Tel Aviv \u2013 New York are common. Emirates currently operates Newark \u2013 Athens \u2013 Dubai, New York JFK \u2013 Milan \u2013 Dubai, and many others. Seventh freedom flights \u2013 between two countries that do not involve an intermediate stop or touch an airline\u2019s home country \u2013 are not common.<\/p>\n

Norwegian has operated a number of U.S. \u2013 Europe flights, though this is enabled because Norwegian\u2019s flights are enabled by the broader E.U. agreement with the U.S. Actual seventh freedom flying is rare, but Rwandair flies several routes out of Benin, SCAT flies Sanya \u2013 Prague, and IinterCaribbean flies Barbados-Guyana and other flights that don\u2019t touch Turks & Caicos.<\/p>\n

The politics of Emirates competing on the New York \u2013 Tel Aviv route would be fascinating. El Al (which partners with Delta) and Arkia will object locally.<\/p>\n

Delta may want to object, though they\u2019re now partnered with state-subsidized Riyadh Air so subsidy complaints will ring hallow. United and Emirates partner but this service would compete directly with United\u2019s Newark \u2013 Tel Aviv. American would likely object, but they haven\u2019t served Israel since October 7th, 2023 and have suspended service until (at least) next year. Their current business certainly doesn\u2019t depend on not having to compete on flights to Israel.<\/p>\n

Part of me wonders, though, whether this is something Emirates would actually do \u2013 or whether it\u2019s being floated for political reasons in advance of Israeli legislative elections scheduled for October 27. <\/p>\n
