{"id":237696,"date":"2026-05-20T04:26:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T04:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/237696\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T04:26:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T04:26:07","slug":"exclusive-wider-bike-lane-coming-this-spring-to-sixth-ave-in-manhattan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/237696\/","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive: Wider Bike Lane Coming This Spring To Sixth Ave. in Manhattan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He\u2019s giving it a wide birth.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Mamdani will widen the protected bike lane on Manhattan\u2019s Sixth Avenue along its most-treacherous stretch \u2014\u00a0and give more space to pedestrians in Herald Square \u2014 marking the latest project that the administration wants to complete in the run up to the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Later today, Mamdani and Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn will announce that the existing protected bike lane between W. 14th and W. 31st streets will widen\u00a0from six\u00a0to 10 feet \u2014 a configuration that promotes safer passing as well as side-by-side biking.\u00a0The project <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2025\/02\/26\/double-wide-bike-lanes-coming-to-sixth-ave-in-midtown\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2025\/02\/26\/double-wide-bike-lanes-coming-to-sixth-ave-in-midtown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had been announced<\/a> under Mayor Eric Adams, but never implemented.<\/p>\n<p>And between W. 31st and W. 35th streets through Herald Square, DOT won\u2019t change the existing five-foot-wide bike\u00a0lane, but will\u00a0add nine feet of expanded pedestrian space, which will do a lot to keep pedestrians outside of the roadway in one of the busiest pedestrian areas of Midtown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat better way to welcome the World Cup than\u00a0by making our streets safer and more accessible for everyone who uses them?\u201d Mayor Mamdani said in a statement. \u201cFrom Sixth Avenue in Manhattan to Broadway in Queens and the iconic Brooklyn Bridge,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0redesigning our streets\u00a0to\u00a0better\u00a0protect\u00a0pedestrians,\u00a0cyclists\u00a0and drivers alike.\u00a0Long after\u00a0the sun\u00a0sets\u00a0on this summer of celebration, these improvements\u00a0will continue serving New Yorkers every single day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Double-wide bike lanes work: In 2024, DOT\u00a0installed\u00a0one\u00a0on\u00a0Sixth Avenue from\u00a0Lispenard\u00a0Street to W. 13th Street. In the full year before the lane went in, 26 cyclists and pedestrians were injured. In the full year after the lane went in, 21 cyclists and pedestrians were injured, despite the much higher number of cyclists who flocked to the lane upon its completion.<\/p>\n<p>But the stretch without the wider bike lane remains dangerous. According to DOT, between\u00a02019 and 2023, there were 29 traffic deaths and severe injuries on Sixth Avenue between 13th and 35th streets, enough that DOT considers the stretch a \u201cVision Zero Corridor\u201d that requires additional safety features.<\/p>\n<p>Wider bike lanes have become an increasingly popular toolkit for DOT. In addition to the portion of Sixth Avenue\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2024\/10\/01\/city-to-close-bike-lane-gap-in-lower-sixth-ave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">south of 14th Street<\/a>, the agency also added the upsized lanes to other\u00a0busy bike corridors in Manhattan, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2023\/04\/07\/eyes-on-the-street-city-debuts-double-lane-protected-bike-lane-on-two-blocks-of-ninth-avenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ninth Avenue<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2023\/08\/24\/double-wide-bike-lanes-coming-to-10th-ave-in-hells-kitchen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">10th Avenue<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2023\/12\/08\/third-ave-complete-street-adds-wide-bike-lane-but-still-keeps-too-much-space-for-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Third Avenue<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2024\/12\/06\/friday-video-wider-bike-lanes-on-second-avenue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Second Avenue<\/a>, along with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2024\/11\/13\/dot-celebrates-a-decade-of-safety-improvements-on-queens-blvd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Queens Boulevard<\/a>\u00a0in the World\u2019s Borough.<\/p>\n<p>Such\u00a0projects have\u00a0reduced\u00a0deaths and serious injuries for all road users by 30 percent and for pedestrians by nearly 32 percent, DOT said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mamdani administration has tasked us\u00a0to work with urgency to improve safety on our streets,\u201d Flynn said in a statement. \u201cSixth Avenue\u00a0now hosts\u00a0one the city\u2019s most popular bike lanes, and it is time\u00a0we make it even better.\u00a0\u2026 Widening this bike lane\u00a0will make the street safer for everyone and provide a calmer,\u00a0more comfortable cycling experience by allowing more room for passing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room will be created by removing one parking lane on Sixth Avenue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"728\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DOT-sixth-ave-diagram-with-stroke.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-591791\"  \/>Here\u2019s what the plan looked like when DOT showed it off last year. Graphic: DOT<\/p>\n<p>The history of biking on Sixth Avenue is a fraught one. It\u2019s almost become an urban fable, but it\u2019s true: then-Mayor Ed Koch returned from a trip to bike-friendly China and demanded that the Department of Traffic install a protected bike lane on the then-Avenue of the Americas. It was four-feet wide and protected with concrete curbs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1978\/07\/07\/archives\/avenue-of-americas-and-broadway-to-get-a-special-bike-lane.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1978\/07\/07\/archives\/avenue-of-americas-and-broadway-to-get-a-special-bike-lane.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Times coverage from 1978<\/a> almost sounds like it could have been written today: \u201cBicycle enthusiasts have\u2022long pressed for special lanes on the city\u2019s streets arguing that this would encourage the use of bicycles over automobiles and would thus help the city reduce pollution and save energy. Opponents have said they would only further congest the city\u2019s already overcrowded major thoroughfares.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opponents won; the bike lane was removed about a year later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1980\/11\/15\/archives\/work-crews-remove-bikelane-barriers-protesters-fail-to-stop.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1980\/11\/15\/archives\/work-crews-remove-bikelane-barriers-protesters-fail-to-stop.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">despite evidence that <\/a>crashes had fallen and bike riders\u2019 compliance with traffic rules increased.<\/p>\n<p>But times change: Daily bike\u00a0trips over the\u00a0East River bridges \u2014\u00a0a key measure of commuter cycling \u2014 reached\u00a0nearly 29,000\u00a0riders\u00a0in\u00a02025, a high \u2014\u00a0almost\u00a018\u00a0times\u00a0the\u00a0number\u00a0recorded in 1980, when the\u00a0city\u00a0first began\u00a0tracking\u00a0bicycle traffic on the\u00a0bridges, City Hall said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>DOT said it would complete the widened lane before World Cup\u00a0matches\u00a0begin in June.\u00a0New Council Member Carl Wilson was pleased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investment guarantees protected biking in one of the most highly traversed corridors in the\u00a0city,\u201d he said. \u201cAs a\u00a0Citi Bike\u00a0user myself, I am pleased to see this improvement, and I am so grateful to DOT for their quick efforts to move this project forward.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"He\u2019s giving it a wide birth.
