{"id":238534,"date":"2026-05-20T21:08:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T21:08:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/238534\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T21:08:38","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T21:08:38","slug":"woman-dies-after-falling-into-an-uncovered-manhole-in-midtown-manhattan-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/238534\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman Dies After Falling Into an Uncovered Manhole In Midtown Manhattan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 56-year-old woman died after falling about 10 feet into an uncovered manhole in Midtown Manhattan late May 18 night near the Cartier store on East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue, according to the NYPD.<\/p>\n<p>The woman was identified as Donike Gocaj. Witnesses said she had just parked her Mercedes-Benz when she stepped out of the vehicle and fell into the open manhole.<\/p>\n<p>Officers responded to a 911 call shortly before 11:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon arrival, officers observed an unconscious and unresponsive 56-year-old female inside of an uncovered manhole in front of the location,\u201d a police spokesperson said in a statement. Bystanders reportedly tried in vain to pull her out of the manhole before first responders arrived but were unable to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEMS responded and transported the female to NewYork-Presbyterian\/Weill Cornell Medical Center, which has the city\u2019s only burn unit, but she was pronounced deceased.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner had not yet determined the exact cause of deaht. Police said there are no arrests at this time, and \u201cthe investigation remains ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Witness Carlton Wood described the moments leading up to the incident in an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/post\/woman-dead-falling-uncovered-manhole-midtown-nyc\/19129645\/\" target=\"_blank\">interview with ABC7 New York.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw a woman stepping out of her car, and as soon as she stepped out, it\u2019s like she took one step forward and just disappeared,\u201d Wood said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was screaming, \u2018I\u2019m dying,\u2019 that\u2019s what I kept hearing her screaming over and over,\u201d he added. \u201cShe wasn\u2019t distracted, she didn\u2019t walk onto a construction site.
