{"id":239227,"date":"2026-05-21T12:46:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T12:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/239227\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T12:46:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T12:46:31","slug":"new-jersey-city-university-holds-final-commencement-before-kean-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/239227\/","title":{"rendered":"New Jersey City University holds final commencement before Kean merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2VSBBMNWOJHUVEK6UL56BIWLLI\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/education\/2026\/04\/a-defining-moment-huge-merger-of-2-nj-colleges-just-got-a-critical-approval.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/education\/2026\/04\/a-defining-moment-huge-merger-of-2-nj-colleges-just-got-a-critical-approval.html\">New Jersey City University<\/a> marked its 99-year history with a proud, poignant final commencement ceremony Tuesday as the school prepared for a huge merger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IR3DO6NECNA7FL5G6ZZXO7N37I\">The 1,551 members of New Jersey City University\u2019s Class of 2026 received their degrees at the Prudential Center in Newark, weeks before the school is set to be absorbed by Kean University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4P5IEQJCPBCVHP4R376N6KOJT4\">\u201cFor nearly a century, this campus has been holy ground for strivers \u2014 not privileged people, but determined people,&#8221; New Jersey City University President Andr\u00e9s Acebo told the graduates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SJEWH2EBGFHA3PBDHG2TRMVPA4\">On July 1, New Jersey City University will be absorbed by Kean University in Union in one of the largest mergers of public universities in the state\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S2KCC5VHMVAXTFUTBGZFBX7GBY\">The Jersey City campus will be renamed Kean Jersey City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6LOPM3AI5BF2HO6OY5XLQ7T63Q\">Kean University has approximately 17,000 students and New Jersey City University enrolls about 5,500 students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LYKQF7TXZFC4BBX5UQCTVUHVPE\">The merger comes after years of financial problems at New Jersey City University. Campus officials have said the merger will come with an unspecified number of layoffs on the Jersey City campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2YYNPKOK5ZH2NOFEBQTQPQNLJA\">The mood was upbeat at New Jersey City University\u2019s commencement with multiple speakers and other attendees focusing on the school\u2019s achievements and role in serving historically underserved students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HGCNWW7BEFCM5NZM64MGUNC3NU\">The four-hour commencement began with a video of the university\u2019s Musical Theater Workshop performing Alanis Morissette\u2019s 1995 song \u201cYou Learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5M3CNZDLW5C4BHQG2BKVQBNVV4\">\u201cWe don\u2019t end today, New Jersey City University. We commence,\u201d Acebo said.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New Jersey City University holds is last commencement before merging with Kean University\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FZBCY6AC6JDBNHDNZ63KWJMHO4.jpg\"  \/>New Jersey City University holds its commencement ceremony at Prudential Center in Newark on Tuesday.John Jones | For NJ.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5PNQMJ2O4JDNXCB3NOK5RY6QDU\">Justin Arias, who graduated with a degree in psychology, was wearing a sash noting that he is a first-generation college student. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K64MDJS6TVDX3HX7CLUD4F3EMY\">\u201cI\u2019m the first in my family to ever graduate college,\u201d said Arias, who said he is saving up for graduate school and planning a career as a school psychologist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K5KJDKCZHFHRDK2SFHEDXJZXYQ\">Asked about the merger, Arias said he is grateful that Jersey City will continue to have \u201ca reliable source of education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7OTHLZHY4FG7XIAFACNWFERSFE\">\u201cIt\u2019s important that each community has it and I think that New Jersey City University serves that purpose very well and the merger was just for the help of the community,\u201d Arias said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NXQ3M6ECSZCNHCP7NWFRWEXBDQ\">Jersey City Mayor James Solomon, an adjunct professor at New Jersey City University from 2015 to 2019, expressed some disappointment in the events leading to the merger. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PQGDYJIVZ5HUREVHXWNZ2YXUEA\">\u201cI know it\u2019s difficult for many folks \u2014 for faculty, for many who poured into this institution, for alumni, to see these changes come,\u201c Solomon said in his speech to graduates. \u201d And I do want to say, as a city leader, I don\u2019t think the city did enough. I don\u2019t think the city did its part to ensure and fight for its future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZME72PCCYBBTVNT3MSTYZ7HI4E\">Solomon, who became mayor in January, said he will seek \u201cto ensure that New Jersey City University in this merger retains the very best part of itself and is committed to ensuring that it continues to deliver as part of Kean Jersey City for our community and our people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New Jersey City University holds is last commencement before merging with Kean University\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6J4I63IQNBAG7EGMYVFXNX6UCM.jpg\"  \/>Jersey City Mayor James Solomon speaks New Jersey City University holds its commencement ceremony at Prudential Center in Newark on Tuesday.John Jones | For NJ.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CUXJ4HTR6JAZRMATR4F2MSWKXY\">Pride in Jersey City, the state\u2019s second-largest city, was a recurring theme at the commencement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VLLVVEVYIVDFNFGA2LUDCL5NNQ\">Gabriella Martinez, who received an undergraduate degree in secondary education and math, was invited to give the student reflection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NU477CJ7LZB2XJAN4PBVO37XKQ\">Martinez said attending Jersey City\u2019s public schools influenced her goal of becoming a middle school math teacher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FEQK3KNHQJA4JH7YYJQ2SSMCDU\">\u201cJersey City didn\u2019t just raise me. It shaped me,\u201d Martinez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RSU2QU4V4BARTGKFYKCEHR4B4U\">\u201cPeople say that this city is rough, that the kids are rough. Maybe that\u2019s true, but I see it differently. We\u2019re not rough, we\u2019re tough,\u201d Martinez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6FPCW47EURG3FMXPEBSCJWNUGY\">The commencement speaker was Jorge Plasencia, a philanthropist and co-founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/republicahavas.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/republicahavas.com\/\">Republica Havas<\/a>, a Miami-based media and communications company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OWKYN2M3PVBR3IE7ERBLUKG3ZM\">Plasencia, whose parents immigrated from Cuba, spoke of working with celebrities ranging from Shakira and Gloria Estefan while stressing the importance of staying true to one\u2019s roots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PJYMGTGY6NBEBJUKUDZUHQJYDA\">\u201cMy parents believed deeply in the promise of America,\u201d Plasencia said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T3BRA6BH45HWFC5SHAIFSDR4X4\">\u201cDignity is not something based on stature. It is something that everybody deserves. As New Jersey City University continues its next chapter, its legacy continues through you,\u201d Plasencia said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"47UWW5JJABBVDFSPIVF4UWH7DU\">The commencement began at 8:30 a.m., with some graduates arriving well in advance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GAWHSDOCDBGBDCNWNJYOKFMIGQ\">Maryana Soto said she left her residence in Rahway by 5:30 a.m. in order to be sure to get parking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QQGJLYJ7O5EZTPPOQ4TUPCB4OY\">\u201cIt was excellent,\u201d Soto said of her time at New Jersey City University. She earned a degree in graphic design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HMFTZ2RDTBA4LGH5NTZRKSSCII\">\u201cI can\u2019t wait, with the opportunities that are coming,\u201d Soto said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PPN24T7B2BANXEDSDIQI323SLE\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msche.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.msche.org\/\">Middle States Commission on Higher Education<\/a>, which accredits the region\u2019s colleges and universities, signed off on the merger last month \u2014 the last needed regulatory approvals, officials said previously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MYM6UJX7QBA7JG35UUETHRGZWE\">The merger still needs approval from the U.S. Department of Education, which is expected to sign off on the deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PWL6OXWWXVHB7NLZNVMPI4GYQ4\">Acebo\u2019s role, if any, at the future Kean Jersey City has not been announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MMA3WI3JB5AAFMQHT26F2ARPW4\">He said New Jersey City University\u2019s mission will endure \u2014 just under a new name and as part of Kean University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SD4WRHJS4JETZNTM75IV374NJY\">New Jersey City University was founded in 1927 as the New Jersey State Normal School at Jersey City.
