{"id":239547,"date":"2026-05-21T18:09:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T18:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/239547\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T18:09:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T18:09:15","slug":"major-supermarket-just-cut-thousands-of-prices-across-ny-and-nj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/239547\/","title":{"rendered":"Major supermarket just cut thousands of prices across NY and NJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stop &amp; Shop is <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/12\/lifestyle\/prices-for-6-grocery-store-staples-are-increasing-right-now\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slashing prices at stores in New York-area<\/a> stores \u2014 with local staples like bagels and smoked salmon coming in as much as 23% below their usual prices as the affordability crisis continues to strain shoppers.<\/p>\n<p>The price cuts will roll out across Stop &amp; Shop\u2019s 137 stores in New York and New Jersey \u2014 with chain president Roger Wheeler calling it a permanent \u201cpricing reset\u201d so its customers can get some relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur first goal is to really acknowledge where our customers are at right now, and what they\u2019re feeling,\u201d Wheeler told The Post. <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39441429\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/postinhouse-nypostinhouse-stop-shop-stop-84124256_450605.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of a Stop &amp; Shop Supermarket in Haskell, NJ.\" class=\"wp-image-39441429\"  \/>Stop &amp; Shop is lowering prices across all of its New York and New Jersey stores. Christopher Sadowski<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are having a hard time, stretching their budgets and having to make tough choices,\u201d he added. \u201cFirst and foremost, we\u2019re trying to be in tune to where our customers are right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The price changes come after years of customer comments about surging prices across the country, which Wheeler explained started rolling in around the COVID pandemic in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>And those affordability woes have grown increasingly loud in recent months as gas prices have soared beyond $5 per gallon in some parts of the country, while the price of groceries have risen 2.9% in the last year.<\/p>\n<p>Energy prices are <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/13\/business\/wholesale-inflation-surges-6-biggest-increase-since-2022-alarm-bells-at-the-fed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also increased by 3.8% from<\/a> March to April \u2014 and are up 17.9% from last year, the US Labor Department reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAffordability complaints against the world have gone up dramatically in the last few years,\u201d Wheeler said. \u201cPeople aren\u2019t just feeling it at the supermarket. Drazen \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Stop &amp; Shop\u2019s \u201cprice reset\u201d follows a company-wide initiative that started two years ago, with stores in the Quincy, Mass.-based retailers home market already seeing cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Other New York favorites seeing price drops include Nathan\u2019s Beef Franks, with costs down 28% \u2014 while Memorial Day staples like kaiser rolls are dropping 9%.<\/p>\n<p>Rotisserie chickens are getting cut by $1 \u2014 to $6.99.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrations will also be more special, with 7-inch single-layer cake prices being reduced by 23%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity for us to retain our loyal customers,\u201d Wheeler said. \u201cBut also to have people who might not be shopping at Stop &amp; Shop come and give us a try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of the price cuts:<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s Beef Franks (8 ct.): Was $7.99, now $5.79 (28% off) <\/p>\n<p>Stop &amp; Shop Whole Rotisserie Chicken: Was 7.99, $6.99 (13% off) <\/p>\n<p>Beef Top Round London Broil: Was $10.79\/lb., now $7.99\/lb. (26% off) <\/p>\n<p>Tropicana Orange Juice (46 oz.): Was $4.99, now $4.49 (10% off) <\/p>\n<p>Freshly Baked Bagel (1 ct.): Was $1.29, now $0.99 (23% off) <\/p>\n<p>Acme Smoked Salmon (12 oz.): Was $21.99, now $17.99 (18% off)<\/p>\n<p>Ssips Sabor Latino Passion Fruit (52 oz.): Was $2.29, now $1.99 (13% off) <\/p>\n<p>Stop &amp; Shop Baked Kaiser Rolls (6 ct.): Was $5.49, now $4.99 (9% off) <\/p>\n<p>Hand Decorated 7\u2033 Single Layer Cake: Was $12.99, now $9.99 (23% off) <\/p>\n<p>Stop &amp; Shop Half &amp; Half Cream (1 Quart): Was $3.49, now $2.99 (14% off) <\/p>\n<p>Bumble Bee Solid White Tuna Albacore (5 oz.): Was $2.29, now $1.99 (13% off) <\/p>\n<p>Stop &amp; Shop Brand Sausage (16 oz.): Was $4.99\/lb., now $3.99\/lb.
