The popular internet comedy show \u201cSubway Takes\u201d sparked outrage Thursday after a guest quipped that white people should be banned from sitting on stoops in Brooklyn because they\u2019re \u201caesthetically not as good.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the episode, Pakistani singer Arooj Aftab offers up the controversial \u201ctake\u201d as she rides the New York City subway with comedian host Kareem Rahma<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWhite people should not be allowed to sit on stoops in Bed-Stuy,\u201d Aftab declares, as Rahma responds with shock.<\/p>\n Singer Arooj Aftab\u2019s \u201ctake\u201d on the internet show sparked outrage. X\/@SubwayTakes<\/p>\n Host of the show, Kareem Rahma, agreed that \u201caesthetically [it\u2019s] not as good\u201d when white people sit on stoops in Bed Stuy. \u201cWow, 100 percent \u2026. disagree!\u201d he replies in the clip<\/a>,<\/a> posted Thursday.<\/p>\n The medium-famous 41-year-old singer, however,\u00a0doubles down.<\/p>\n \u201cIt looks bad. It\u2019s aesthetically not as good, especially for Bed-Stuy as a neighborhood,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n \u201cAs more and more white people are moving into Bed Stuy and messing up the vibes, and having our favorite bars and our favorite places close down, they should not be inviting all their friends and sitting on the stoop,\u201d she said of the historically black neighborhood. \u201cI think it\u2019s rude to the history of the place.\u201d<\/p>\n Rahma agreed that \u201caesthetically [it\u2019s] not as good\u201d when white people sit on stoops in northern Brooklyn\u2019s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, but didn\u2019t elaborate.<\/p>\n She finally added that for 12 years she\u2019s\u00a0lived in the neighborhood \u2014 which has gone from 74% black in 2000 to 40% black in 2023<\/a>, as the white population in the same time has gone from about 2% to 26%, sparking complaints of gentrification. <\/p>\n Aftab later quipped that, even though she\u2019s not white, she doesn\u2019t sit on her own stoop in the Brooklyn nabe.<\/p>\n Arooj Aftab thinks this shouldn\u2019t be allowed in Bed Stuy. tisaeff \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n \u201cSo even you, out of respect as a brown woman, you\u2019re like \u2018I\u2019m not gonna sit on the stoop because I\u2019m not black\u2019?\u201d Rahma asked. <\/p>\n \u201cYea, yea,\u201d Aftab said, as they both broke into laughter. <\/p>\n Online critics didn\u2019t seem to care if the duo were joking for not \u2014 and were quick to bash Aftab.<\/p>\n
