Both runways are now operational at LaGuardia Airport after a sinkhole closed one of the travel hub\u2019s airstrips days before the busy Memorial Day weekend, airport officials said.<\/p>\n
The Port Authority, which operates LaGuardia, said workers discovered the sinkhole near runway 4\/22 during a routine morning inspection on Wednesday. Officials had planned to re-open the airstrip on Friday but were delayed after workers found additional problems.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing a thorough inspection of LaGuardia\u2019s airfield pavement using ground-penetrating radar, areas of concern were identified and proactively repaired,\u201d airport officials said in a written statement. \u201cThose repairs are now complete.\u201d<\/p>\n
The sinkhole has upended air travel at the airport and officials warned of residual delays, even after the runway reopened.
