What was that one about?<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">This 10-week conflict grew out of Cuba\u2019s fight for independence from Spain. But that didn\u2019t make a difference to the city leaders in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. They commissioned a Classical-style monument to the men of the borough who died during this brief but pivotal war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Like many neighborhood monuments, it\u2019s easy to miss. The two memorials forge a poignant bond at this intersection of older Bronx buildings and newer public housing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a few other Spanish-American War memorials in New York, like the allegorical USS Maine monument at the Columbus Circle entrance to Central Park\u2014paid for with donations by readers of William Randolph Hearst\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centralparknyc.org\/locations\/maine-monument\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Morning Journal<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/spanish-american-war-yellow-journalism-hearst-pulitzer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">helped build the case<\/a> for the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a triumphant piece of civic architecture and calls out the names of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/research\/publications\/documentary-histories\/united-states-navy-s\/destruction-of-the-m.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">266 U.S. sailors<\/a> who died in the explosion.
