Galveston’s historic tall ship\u00a0Elissa has revealed a new departure date for its voyage<\/a> to New York as part of the 250th anniversary of the founding of\u00a0the United States.<\/p>\n

The ship, previously scheduled to leave earlier this month, is now scheduled to set sail June 10, giving it more time to “ensure equipment and crew are prepared,” a spokesperson with the Galveston Historic Foundation said. With the new schedule, the ship will no longer stop at the Virginia ports of Yorktown and Portsmouth, the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

The voyage is part of a nationwide effort to bring more than 60 military and tall ships from 20 countries to New York Harbor for the Fourth of July weekend.<\/p>\n

The Elissa will visit several locations in the days leading to July 4, including Pensacola, Fla.; Savannah, Ga.; New York City and Boston.<\/p>\n

Built in Scotland and first launched in 1877, the\u00a0Elissa was scheduled to be dismantled in the early 1970s, before Galveston preservationists successfully lobbied to\u00a0bring it to the island in <\/a>1978<\/a>.<\/a> It has been preserved on the island ever since.<\/p>\n

Once it sets sails, people will be able to track the Elissa online, while those in cities where it docks will be able to go aboard and tour the ship.<\/p>\n
