A Bronx family was displaced after a fire tore through\u00a0a Highbridge apartment Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n
At least one person was injured, according to FDNY.<\/p>\n
The fire broke out shortly before 12:50 p.m. on the sixth floor of 1425 University Ave. Thick\u00a0smoke could be seen pouring from the apartment windows as firefighters rushed to the scene.<\/p>\n
Neighbor Jose De Jesus jumped into action before crews arrived.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I saw the smoke, I went in with my fire extinguisher,\u201d\u00a020-year-old De Jesus said. \u201cI took out something that was in the living room.\u201d<\/p>\n
That \u201csomething\u201d De\u00a0Jesus said was\u00a0a carpet that had caught fire inside the family\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was really scary \u2014 completely blacked out. It was bad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The father who lives in the apartment, Francisco, said he had just returned home from work when his children were playing in the living room. He said his daughter accidentally set the carpet on fire.<\/p>\n
Francisco said he tried desperately to put the flames out himself. He carried the burning carpet\u00a0to a sink \u2014 but said no water came out when he turned on the faucet.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a problem. We should always have access to water,\u201d De Jesus said while translating for his neighbor.<\/p>\n
FDNY firefighters later searched the apartment and helped bring the fire under control. The\u00a0family was able to escape safely.<\/p>\n
Both the fire and water heavily damaged Francisco\u2019s\u00a0apartment. The\u00a0family\u00a0was receiving assistance from the Red Cross as of Monday\u00a0evening.<\/p>\n
Despite the destruction, Francisco said he is thankful for his neighbor\u2019s bravery.<\/p>\n
