Rice for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>During the heated confrontation, the police chief allegedly fired an accidental shot. <\/p>\n<p>No one was struck, but Gurley injured his arm during the fight and will wear a sling while he heals, the sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The Haverstraw Police Department responded to the shooting and is leading the investigation. The NYPD\u2019s Force Investigation Division and Internal Affairs Bureau are separately probing the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Sources told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/05\/25\/nypd-assistant-chief-benjamin-gurley-off-duty-shooting-incident-suburbs-haverstraw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York Daily News<\/a> that Gurley\u2019s duty status has not been impacted by the accidental gunfire.<\/p>\n<p>Gurley joined the NYPD in 2000.
